Bars at bottom of screen

Hi,

I am using a MBP 2010, I know it's old but up until now it has been perfect. High Sierra, version10.13.6

I have no idea what happened but I left computer with nothing running ( I thought) and came home 5 or 6 hours later to find it running hot and bars at the bottom of the screen. Now,

The machine refuses to start up in safe mode. I have reset NVRAM & SMC. Filevault is not on.

Any ideas, what this is and what I can do considering I can't get into SAFE mode.

Any help is welcomed.
