Okay so my wife has been having an issue with her base 13" MBA.

When she tries to restart it, it will close all the programs, the dock and taskbar will go away and it will just sit there with the wallpaper up and the rainbow wheel going forever. Sometimes it will go to the blue/gray screen, but I have yet to see it actually restart on its own.

We can turn it off and turn it back on by holding the power key and then everything seems fine until you try to restart it again. Any thoughts???

Why is there a need to restart in the first place? And does the same occur on another (temporary) account?

Have you tried resetting the SMC or PRAM yet, or repaired permissions?

I know it sounds simple, but have you tried repairing disk permissions?

First of all, ALL computers should be able to restart without any issues. It doesn't matter if it is needed or not. Every computer should be able to restart or shut down cleanly.

I have not tried resetting the permissions or messing with the PRAM yet. I will try that and see what happens.

It should, but sometimes it won't, as something might be messed up, which might be repaired via Repairing Permissions, and if not, one could see, if the problem is only affecting one account and not the whole computer, by trying it with another temporary account, while not logged into the account having problems.
