Can anyone tell me how long it roughly takes for the base model (3.0GHz,1TB fusion drive) 2019 5k iMac to boot up ?

Thanks in advance

Definitely not 12-14s.

It was around 30s I think with the original Mojave it came with and then slightly longer after the recent update.

I have the 27 inch base with a SSD and it takes maybe 15 seconds tops... it’s nuts... time may be different for the fusion drive one though I don’t know.

So would it being slower just be down to it running Mojave or os it also the newer machine is just slightly slower.

If it is just Mojave making it slower then how hatd/easy is it to put High Sierra on the machine instead ?

So our mid 2017 with a fusion drive being able to do it in 12-14 seconds is pretty good then.

Yeah I’m also measuring from when I hit the start button not when the thing actually turns on... so I don’t know how everyone else is doing it.

We currently have the base model mid 2017 5k iMac (still running high Sierra) and that boots up in 12-14 seconds,i was hoping the 2019 model would do it in roughly the same time.

The difference in boot up times may have to do with the fact that the 2019 has a Fusion Drive formatted with APFS by default while the 2017 came with a Fusion Drive formatted to HFS+. Still, the 2017 booting in that amount of time seems like it might have an SSD installed instead of a Fusion drive.

You cannot install High Sierra on the 2019, at least not easily or is it recommended.

Besides, once it’s booted, there’s really no reason to shut it down every day...just put it to sleep.

Thanks for your reply.

It definitely has a 1tb fusion drive as I have had it from new and it also stated it when I look a the storage capacity, would have been nice if it was a 1tb SSD that i got sent by mistake.

Seeing you know more than I probably do,do you think it is worth upgrading from the mid 2017 5k base model which will have no warranty left in 3 weeks, and go to a 2019 base model 5k which will be brand new and will cost me £200 to upgrade, but would seem it is slower to boot up.

Is the 2019 machine much better than the mid 2017 ? I can see it is 6 core over 4 core, but does that make much difference ?

SSD will always boot the fastest.

2tb fusion (with 128gb SSD portion) will probably boot quite fast.

1tb fusion (with 32gb SSD portion) will probably boot relatively quickly when new, but may "slow down a bit" with time.

Platter-based hard drive will AWAYS be "the slowest" -- often painfully slow.

From a strictly benchmark perspective, the 6-core 2019 iMac is faster, so you will see some speed gains. If you work on a lot of processor intensive tasks like audio, video, photography, mathematics, scientific, you would definitely see a speed gain due to the two extra cores. However, the extent of that speed gain is not something I can speak to since I don't know your exact workflow. If you feel like things are moving slower than they should, it would be wise of you to seriously consider upgrading your 2017 to an SSD or configuring one of Apple's BTO SSDs if you purchase the 2019 model. I suspect any slowness if from using the 1TB Fusion Drive, which is not an ideal example of Fusion technology. I won't hammer on it like @Fishrrman does, but he isn't wrong. That 1TB Fusion is a dog and even the 2TB or 3TB would be better, but ideally, don't spend any money on a new iMac unless you are willing to spend the extra money to go to the 256 (bare minimum) or 512GB SSD. Hope that helps.

Do you use FileVault? If that's the case, you'll get a "log in page" right away to unlock the disk before it boots the system.

A more fair measure would be the time it takes until the desktop and dock is all loaded and usable.

Random power outages lol... mine gets shut down every night just to be safe...

It really depends what you use it for honestly...
