Looking to buy a new iMac for the office but i'm having some trouble finding information about thermal throttling and specific CPUs.
The plan is as follows:
From what I can tell the 7600k and 7700/7700K are all 91W TDP while the 7600 is 65W TDP. Looking at some old forum thread it seemed to be the case that using a 7700K (or basically a top specced iMac from the Apple Store) would only marginally beat some of the mid-specced ones in sustained workloads. Does anyone know of any place where I can find such benchmarks? Synthetic or otherwise.
The idea with the EPGU is that since the internal graphics options are all basically poop grade anyway I can move some of the heat off the single fan inside the iMac in order to improve CPU performance and at the same time actually get usable graphics that will work somewhat OK at 5k. This works out particularly well as I already own an EGPU as well.
Did anyone try to do something like this?
The plan is as follows:
- Buy baseline 27" iMac with a 256GB SSD instead of the fusion drive
- Buy a new CPU, looking at getting a 7700K or a 7600, depending on thermal throttling information I can find.
- Delid CPU and upgrade.
- Upgrade to 32GB DDR4
- Use EGPU with SSD to extend graphics and storage capabilities.
