somewhere inside my MAC
:)Hey,
I just got windows on my Macbook. I have installed all the drivers and everything is running smoothly. I just wanted to know what are the basic applications that must be installed before using it, like WinRar, DirectX, etc.

Thanks~

i use Boot Camp for gaming and then access the Boot Camp partition in VMware for Office and IE.

when i do a fresh install of Windows i always install an Anti Virus straight away. you can either choose the free AVG or go for Avast, Kaspersky or CA Vet etc. then update the anti virus straight away. you can also install a security suite if you wish which but i usually use free apps to handle this (below).

then i install spyware, adware apps like Spybot, Ad-aware & SpywareBlaster (all free). make sure you update them straight away and turn on all protection in SpywareBlaster.

then for uni work in VMware i install Acrobat Reader, Office 2003, IE7.

then for utilities WinRAR, Nero, Daemon Tools (mounts ISOs) & K-Lite Mega codec pack (plays EVERYTHING!).

DirectX is already included with XP. if you want DirectX 10 you need to update to Vista.

everyone is going to have different answers. just install the apps you think you'll use. i have xp on mine, but the only software i have installed is a stress testing program and firefox. i'll probably install a copy of office later on, but i try to force myself to use osx as much as possible.

Why did you install Windows if you have no use for it?

If you have a use then install just that one program.

As people have said, it depends what you want to do on the PC side, for example I use CDex as there is nothing similar on the Mac side that works as well for me. I also use IrfanView if I happen to be on the PC side and need to edit pics, it just depends what you need.

For my phone, I use the updater on the PC side as it downloads as an exe file.

There is nothing you MUST install on a Vista machine.

You will gradually install whatever you need to use it.

on XP, AVG would be a must IMO, and thats it.
