In near future I was planning to use my iPhone to scan documents (ios12), airdrop to Mac (Catalina), edit and use/share etc..

How do I do this. The scan gives me a .pdf file and airdrops simply enough.

Why can I not edit that file? Other than 'Preview'.

What do I do to make this work??

Do I need another App? pdf has always been a blank for me but now I need to get it sorted.

All help very gratefully received - nb:- totally ignorant on this subject.

Thank you.

yep you need an app. Adobe acrobat, or PDFPen are a couple possibilities. There are various others available, each with their pluses and minuses.

OK.

Research sometimes is taken from magazine articles/pamphlets/books and even old letters. I would like (rather than re-type) to scan (iPhone) move to Mac and remove sections or change some words on the document (not plagiarise), then file (renamed) to produce a file of research (with added references) that I can refer to when time comes to do my own writing.

Reasons - I am limited in ways that make it difficult (not impossible) for me to use more traditionally accepted read - précis - combine & type. The edit- cut -paste & dictate route will from trials enable me to be faster and more creative in my own writing.

This has taken a long time to type and only represents part of my thinking on the subject (your question).

Hope that is a better description of my goal.

What you are looking for is an app that will do text recognition. I use the Readdle Scanner Pro app for scans on my iPhone and I notice that it also does text recognition (although I have never used the app for that purpose). The app will also automatically upload to iCloud (if you have it switched on) and other cloud services such as DropBox, etc.

I'm sure there are other similar apps as well.

I can recommend PDFPen by Smile software. They have mac and iOS versions that can do what you want to.
