basic iMessage questions

Using the messages app:

1. It shows when a message is delivered, though is there a way to know if/when it is read? Is this only possible if the other person has this option enabled on his/her iPhone?
2. Sometimes a message I send shows Sent as Text Message to another 4S user. Why is this?

1. Correct, the other person must enable "Send Read Receipts" in their settings.

2. I've had that happen a couple times. Might have been a hiccup with iMessage and it defaulted back to a Text Message. Or the other person might not have enabled iMessage.

1. Yes, the other user needs to enable it.
2. If for some reason it can't send it over iMessage is fails over to SMS.
