Hello all. The battery on my MacBook Pro 13 mid 2012 (A1278) has about 60% capacity. I was planning to replace it. However, all of a sudden it is completely dead. When connected to a charger, it says that is has 100% charge, but the moment I disconnect the charger the Mac dies.

The question is if there could be other issues than a bad battery. So I can troubleshoot before paying for a new battery (and find out the problem was elsewhere)

Is it the original battery that came with the MPB?

If so, congratulate yourself on having gotten around 12 years out of it.

Time for a new battery.
There are many choices available.

This is a "unibody" MBP with the DVD drive, right?
If so, the battery is EASY to change out.
Go to ifixit.com to see what's involved and what tools you need (just a pair of drivers, cheap and easily found).

But be aware:
Buying replacement batteries is a "crapshoot".
Like Forrest Gump said, it's like a box of chocolates -- you never know what you're going to get.
Even batteries from "the reputable sources" may last only a year or two before getting flaky.
NOTHING lasts as well as the OEM factory-installed batteries.
It's "just the way it is".

One other thing:
Since you're going to take the back cover off to replace the battery...

What kind of DRIVE is inside?
Is it the original, platter-based hard drive?

If so, might be time to buy a 2.5" SATA SSD and put it in there.
It will make things run MUCH faster.
2.5" SSDs are CHEAP.
Doing the drive swap is EASY.

Plenty of help in this forum if you need it.

Yep it was the battery. Swollen like a ripe melon 🙈 So now I just run it without battery until I get a new one 😊 It was a aftermarked battery about 3 years old.
Om the bright side, it fixed the track pad that didn't work like it should 😁
I have ssd. I also have replaced the DVD player with a second disk. And 16 gig of ram
