I have noticed this a couple of times now.

MY iPhone is at 100% and I put it in airplane mode then go to bed. The next day it's at 88% and reports 12 hours of usage and 12 hours of standby. It reports usage of various apps, much like those I would use during the day.

What could cause it to lose battery when it is in airplane mode? For the moment I've reset all settings; I don't really want to turn off background app refresh, and it shouldn't make a difference anyway.

But it should still be at or near 100% in the morning like my iPhone 8 or iPad.

As a test,
Charge phone as usual to 100%
Quit all apps
Turn off background app refresh
Turn off Location Services
Put phone in airplane mode via Settings & make sure wifi is off.
Take phone off charger and see what the battery level is the next morning.

If the battery level remains high the next morning (97-100), then one or a combination of those settings is using the power.

Disable bluetooth and report back.

If that helps, then forget all BT devices.

If neither helps, then Reset Network Settings.

If that doesn't help either, then Reset All Settings.

You didn't say what phone you had, but the battery could be bad, or some rogue apps like facebook could be the culprit. @now i see it has the right combination of things to to try. If all else fails, bring your phone into apple.

I just had a 6s battery replaced. I can charge the phone to 100% before I go to bed, put the phone in low power mode and the phone will be at 100% when I wake up. This is on ios 11.3b1. I believe apple ironed out the battery drain issues in this beta.

Ya it does seems high. I mean I can put my phone on low power mode overnight and it loses 0-1%. I’ll try doing that tonight. Low power mode. Airplane mode shouldn’t lose a charge. Does it use a lot of battery on regular use? Maybe there are poorly programmed apps running rampant. I say restore or take it to the Apple store.

OP is having decent performance vs. my drain: I'm seeing about 3%/hr drain overnight.

I tend to roll my eyes at the "my battery life is terrible" threads as really not scientific since very subjective. No controls/experiments being done. With that said, I've started to notice drain on my 8. Can't compare it to my previous 6 as cannot recall exactly what kind of drain I did see on it. And did not have it long enough on iOS 11 to really tell.

And have done much of what others have suggested: deleted rogue background apps (in my case, MyFitnessPal), turned off background refresh on almost everything. I live in a weak cell signal zone, so, tried Airplane Mode last night with same results.

Not paying close attention during the day as usage is different each day (what apps, how often/long, where etc) and as others have mentioned in other related threads, the battery meter is not "linear" how it is reporting things (ie. big leaps at times in % reported).

Not stressing this, yet, as I am usually close to some power source and phone never gets that low that it's time to panic, but if annoys enough, might have to do the factory reset and re-setup everything (ugh!).

I just did a reset all settings instead of a factory reset. Taken off charge 6 hours ago, on airplane mode and still at 100%. That's more like it.

airplane mode shuts off external communications and doesn't shut down all functions. So you could have a game doing graphics and motion stuff still in AirPlane mode

It lost 1% in 22 hours or so in airplane mode..happy with it again. I've been browsing and listening to music for an hour and 40 minutes. Resetting all settings seems to have been the cure.
