Battery draining Fast!

Storage : 500GB
Cycle Count:1514

Hi guys, Since i updated to mavericks my macbook crashes a lot and these days my battery is draining fast too.1-2 days ago my Laptop Battery was charged 96% and estimated time was 1:01.Its battery is draining too fast. My dad uses this laptop at night.He watches videos and at day i use Skype,Google Chrome and Minecraft(GAME). These three programs are open at the same time and whenever i use laptop after like half an hour or so i have to connect the charger.Please help

Well i live in Pakistan and i dont think so there is more then 6 Verified Apple Store

That makes no difference, the battery is old and past its prime.

There must be an independent place you can take it to who can change the battery for you.

I had a 2011 MBP, where Mavericks seemed to drain the battery quicker than under Lion or Mountain Lion. I upgraded to a late 2013 rMBP, and sold the 2011 MBP, so I can't comment as to how it performs under Yosemite.

I'd suggest running the hardware diagnostics to see if there's hardware issue contributing to the constant crashing. It kinda sounds like you might have some RAM that's failing, but there also could be some software that's goofing things up.

If nothing shows up, I'd recommend doing a clean install of Yosemite and reinstall all your app's (yeah...I know that takes a while) to see if this clears up the crashing problem.

OMG! There is 250GB of my data how am i supposed to clean install.I am using smc fan controller now so lets see if it restarts or not

SMC fan controller will make no difference to battery life. As has been said already at 5 years old your battery needs replacing. It is not difficult on those old 2009's just order a new one and look up a guide on how to replace it on you tube.

Honestly,There is no Paypal in my country and there is no way i can pay.

He has 1500 load cycles on a battery that's rated at 1000, so this is normal.

However, I'm going to post mine as I feel like I'm getting sub-par battery life

Let me know what you think about this. I'm going to do a calibration today and see if that helps

That battery is also nearly 5 years old, while battery life is influeneced by load cycles, age plays a much more important role than people think. To be honest that is fantastic for a 4 years and 8 month old battery.

That 1000 load cycle rating is for use within 3 years and with a rating of still getting 80%.....

You rae getting 89% on full charge after 4 years 8 months you can't ask for more than that..

The 89% is for current charge, not capacity, the capacity is showing 81. But I do understand what you're saying about time as well as usage. I figured that was probably the case.

What you're seeing is completely natural for several reasons.

First of all batteries are components that simply wear out and have to be replaced every few years the same way tires, alternator belts, brakes, spark plugs, windshield wipers, motor oil, transmission fluid, various ball bearings, air and oil filters are on cars. It's simply just a law of electronics.

Second of all is that what you're using isn't exactly very light on the battery. Youtube uses Flash very heavily and Flash is a well known batteryhog due to poor programming (you can thank your neighbors to the south for that) and a general refusal to open up the standard so that the problems can be fixed. Minecraft, or rather games in general very light on the battery and Minecraft is actually a lot worse than what you'd think when you see it. It used to be worse when Notch was still lead developer, but it still suffers a lot of wasted CPU cycles and memory stemming from being built in a language called Java (which I personally hate for a number of reasons).

The reason why I Java is bad from a resource use perspective stems from the fact that it's supposed to be a language to make software that'll run on any hardware and any operating system. To achieve this programs are not translated into machine code like most languages, but so-called Java bytecode. Rather than being run natively on the hardware, it's instead run on something called a JVM, or Java Virtual Machine, a software machine inside of a machine, which naturally wastes a lot of CPU time and memory, eating your battery faster.

It drains after 2 hours of getting full charged

If you MacBook is 14 years old, Id say you need a new battery

Mavericks was not a good OS. Loads of bugs. Best to go to Yosemite if you can.

I’d suggest upgrading to Mojave. That’s probably the last good version of OSX that’ll run on that computer.

The next suggestion is to open the back and check for dust in the fan vents….as you’re in Pakistan, it’s a dusty place! If you don’t have the tools, any good computer tech familiar with Macbooks can do it. They can also check if the battery is swelling….it probably is beginning to considering the number of cycles.

The battery is obviously aging; buying an china knock off MIGHT be feasible, but it’s luck of the draw whether it’s an improvement or not. My advice….keep the laptop plugged in. Also, make a backup of your data.
