iPod Battery for 1st gen iPod

I have a 1st gen iPod in my "collection" that is not in use, but I still like to keep the battery charged .
I've tried two different batteries purchased of ebay and both drain quite fast even though the device is turned off.
Is this a battery issue or does all 1st gen iPods drain batteries fast?, if not what is the best battery to buy?.

Hi,
what do you mean with fast. A few days or weeks? It should hold a charge for a few weeks. If it doesn’t the either the capacity of the battery has become little or the Board is defektive.
