Mid 2010 MacBook Pro. Battery reports fully charged at 84%. I take it that the battery is old and not fully functionable. Any idea how long it will be until it needs replacement?

This machine sat unused for many years. It's a 13" Unibody MacBook Pro. It is now reporting 98% charged. I am running the most current Linuxmint OS on it. I am pretty sure it is reporting accurately.

What indicates that the battery needs to be replaced? I know that is a slog. Trying to decide if the machine is a keeper. If so will add 1 TB drive and up RAM to 8GB.

Your 2010, 13-inch, MacBook Pro will actually support up to 16GB max.

I think there is no way to predict how accurately the battery will be reported by a non-Apple operating system.
If the battery is original, then 12 or 13 years is a long time for a battery, particularly if it was stored for an extended period without occasional charging over that time.
With that in mind, then I suggest that if you are upgrading memory and boot drive, that you simply replace the battery at the same time.

13 years is a long time. Any other metrics to determine battery health? How do I know if the new battery is 13 year old NOS or recently manufactured?

How long does the battery last in actual use?
More than 1 hour? Depending on your needs, that may (or may not) be enough for now.

Unless you are searching for an actual Apple-sold (OEM) battery, then I would suggest that you look for batteries that have good reports from other users. iFixit sells batteries (or has links to other sites), and I think is generally a trustworthy site for repair parts. MacSales.com is another choice.
Or, you can wade through the listings on Amazon. I very often will look there (I purchase 5 to 10 batteries a year, as I do repairs for friends) again looking for lots of sales, with mostly good reports. So far, I have had good luck with replacement batteries. I have bought several with "NinjaBatt" brand. So far, good ones.
BUT, I also use the saying "Cheap laptop batteries are often not a bargain"
Good luck! There's a lot of batteries on Amazon that are sold to fit your MacBookPro

I left it running on battery only:
8:06 PM 98% full
9:12 PM 76% full 2:55 remaining
9:54 PM 62% full 3:32 remaining
11:07 PM ? full 1:12 remaining

I briefly ran something several times. Mostly it just sat doing nothing. I don't think the battery is in terrible shape.
A good way to test the battery?

Looks like battery replacement is not too bad. Not as bad as on a MacBook Pro Retina 13" Early 2015.

there
My MacBook Pro 2012 battery lasts as long as that did 2 years ago.
when the service battery appear, you hav several months to replace.

And
they are very easy to replace,
just remove the bottom,
unscrew the battery
pop the new one in!

I recommend OWC for batteries, they supplied one for MBA2010 last December that is incredible!
