Hey guys, I took delivery of my new 15" Santa Rosa MPB yesterday. I have Istat Pro on it installed and I have noticed that the battery health on it says 97%, as we know it is a new battery so shouldnt it be at 100%?

download coconut battery to make sure its 97%. Try recalibrating the battery by running it down till it deep sleeps and charge it back to 100%. if you still get less than 100% then its not ideal in a new laptop. you might want to contact apple on this one considering its practically new.

Did you guys follow the instructions to calibrate your batteries? This will fix the percentage being less then 100.

If you have your MPB PLUGGED IN, that is the reason why it will remain at 98% or 97%.

I believe the battery needs to drain to 95% before it recharges back to 100%. This is a feature to prevent the battery from overcharging.

make sure you calibrate right.

Do it while you sleep...you need to rest the computer (while its in sleep, battery drained) for at least 5 hours before charging.

after the battery reaches 100% it will receive a trickle charge until it reaches 95.

Wait, so first of all: once you get your MBP... do you plug it in and charge it or do you use the battery 'til its drained? With either case, do you use it 'til its drained..... like less than 10% left.... and put it to sleep? or do you completely drain it and leave it for 5 hours? Then plug it back in or what?

Basically, use your computer unplugged. Keep using it until it shuts down by itself, then leave it like that for 5 hours. After 5 hours, plug the charger in and you may resume your work on the computer. Which is why you should do it while you sleep.

Basically what I said from apple:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284

Soooo... I recalibrated the battery, just so everyone here knows I did it right. I charged it completly and left it on the plug for 2 hours after it was charged, then I unplugged it and ran it untill it went to sleep, I went to sleep for 8 hrs and when I woke up it was dead basically, the sleep light was off and it would not turn on. I then plugged it in untill fully charged. Wierd thing though on istat the battery health says 98%, and on coconut battery It says 100%... Only thing I can come to think of is that istat is just off or not accurate?

istat says my new mbp is at 98% and i am going to call apple to see about getting a new battery.
I dont think they will give you another one. They have a policy about batteries. Something like if your battery doesn't hold more than around 50%, they will send you a new one. Otherwise...

Not true, call them and tell them it draing fast, the will next day you a battery and send you a shipping carton for the return....they are good at that :)

Yes Istat says the same on mine, but when you check the battery with something a little bit more reliable like Coconut Battery, it appears as 100% or 99% wich is fairly normal. The problem appears to be Istat wich is not acurate.

My battery time is a little screwy on my new MBP 17'' too. Coming out of sleep it said I had four hours, then it jumped down to 2 hours. I plugged in the adapter and at 75% it said I only had 47 minutes remaining. Now I'm at 74% with 1 hour 57 minutes

Did you calibrate the battery when you first got it?

The battery has a chip which it uses to calculate battery charge/time remaining, the process is basically to fully charge, leave for 2hrs on charger, fully discharge (not just to sleep but fully) and then fully charge. This gives the chip enough info to do its job.

Is anyone more familiar with this than me? I'm sure there is a page on apple support.

No. But after reading through this thread I'm going to drain the battery and recharge in the morning

When the adapter is plugged in, the battery icon tells you how much time left until fully charged. When the adapter is unplugged, the time is how much you have left in use. The estimated time also changes based on what you're doing with your computer. If you hadn't done anything yet, then you should contact Apple.

The problem I stated initially was regarding to BATTERY HEALTH not BATTERY LIFE, but ok this thread has gone way off subject.

Question though guys...

Before i calibrated my battery as apple describes, istat pro and Coconut Battery said my battery health was at 100 %

After the calibration they both now show the health at 96%......

I just had this thing for one week. I can understand that maybe my battery was at 96 the whole time and i had to calibrate it to get the proper reading, but i hope that by calibrating it wasn't the cause of this 4% health loss.

Any comments?

Ok, this is weird... i rebooted my computer and now it reads as having 100%, but if you look at coconut battery, it's actually more than 100%. Check out this screenshot:

I have this exact same problem. Yes I've calibrated, only once, but I've only had it a week. It read fine before I calibrated (not untill the next day) and now w/iStat reads Health: 100% Charge: 96% Cycles: 1
w/coconut reads current battery capacity: 5511mAh?
original battery capacity: 5500 mAh?
100%
current battery charge: 5285 mAh
maximum battery charge: 5511 mAh
95%

I've also had numerous problems w/ frozen screen on awakening from sleep, plus I have dial-up (archaic) and the modem hangs up continually if there is the slightest delay in information transfer. Impossible to stay connected even long enough to finish software updates. (updating to 10.4.10 a possible cure??) Problems for other forums perhaps, but in the pit of my stomach I'm a little unhappy w/it. Never had any problems w/previous Macs. Crashes very rare. Any consensus on grounds for a return? or re-calibrate??
