My understanding of it is that each time you recharge your battery, it's capacity to store the maximum charge is reduced. For example a fresh battery will last for say 4 hours, then after 100 charges it can only store enough for 3.5 hours.

I assume by 45% battery life implies that you'll get roughly half the capacity/time compared to what you initially got.

Just curious

Whats apples stance on this:
do they replace the battery if your getting less that fifty precent than it should (i heard they did that with some of the ipod batteries)
what can i do?

I think there were certain iPod batteries which were eligible for free replacement or replacement for around $100. I don't believe there's anything like this for any of the notebooks, your only option is buying a new battery.

IIRC... if your battery looses 50% charge in 1 year then you can get it replaced... but you'd have to get an official Apple statement on that one. I don't remember.

Update

I talked to apple and they basically said they would do nothing, so i tried one of my friends battery's while he is away and it got the result shown in the attached picture.

lol and the only problem is http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/3297/picture25bm.png but other than that its lasted since the last post/picture
so i may do a battery swap with him (without him knowing) and then i will have the battery so I can last through a whole day at school and the other problem is that the last time I was in france was 1999 and my dad isnt working over there anymore so us other members of the family dont get to go (unless qantas gives my mum more free tickets(she works for qantas))

If your battery has had 374 cycles I assume its quite old. 2 years maybe? If so this is to be expected, batteries degrade naturally. You can maintain their lifespan using certain methods, like always fully charging them and then fully discharging them, but I'll guess you haven't been doing that.

Guys

Sorry to gatecrash with my own question. My PowerBook is nearly 3 years old, and for the past six months I've been having a battery issue. Even with minimum screen brightness, and both BT and AE turned off, I never get lower than 60% on the charge indicator before the 'Book goes into sleep mode. Even with recalibration and resets of the PMU, there's no improvement.

I've got the spare cash for a new battery, but before I shell out I just want to ask if this sounds like I could have a bigger issue with the PowerBook itself. The 'Book still has about two months of AppleCare left on it, so I'll have to be a bit quick about getting it in if there's a bigger problem.

What do you think?

It sounds like that your issue is just battery related. Batteries just decrate after a while of use and 3years is quite some time for a battery.

Just to back up Alex, the symptoms you descibe are exactly what happened to my PB. A new battery fixed it right up!
