Ok, so this probably a dumb question but do any of you use the macbook (pro) without the battery in it and run it strictly from the adapter? Cnet.com mentions taking out the battery in order to preserve its life when you're not using it but I didn't know if it could be applied to Macs.

Thanks...I hope that question isn't too painful.

I don't think this is necessary, since you won't be charging/discharging the battery once its charged, if you're running on mains power. That said, it 'should' work, but I don't see a good reason for it.

I think Apple has set it so that it doesn't charge the battery until it drops below 95% or something like that(can someone verify?). So, as long as its at 100% and you're plugged in it shouldn't affect anything. But the thing to note is that you should use your battery fully once in awhile. The problem comes when people leave their portables stuck on a table and then NEVER use their batteries and then wonder 2~3years down the line why their batteries don't hold as much charge as before.

It did seem a little unnecessary to me too. It seems like macbook was designed to operate with the battery in place. But thanks for reaffirming my gut answer.

Calibrating the battery was the first thing I did when I got it out of the box yesterday. Well that and actually read some of the manual.

I don't think Apple recommends removing the battery, however since lithium batteries are heat sensitive, it would be logical to assume that battery life would be extended by removing it when the mac is plugged in, as macbooks become quite hot.
However, if you take out your battery, your mac will only run at 1 Ghz...
So probably no-one ever takes it out.

Based on my knowledge of laptops over in the PC side of the world, I would say that it depends. Yes, taking the battery out will prolong its overall life IF you're not charging/discharging regularly. However, as another poster said, your Mac will operate at a slower speed if you remove the battery.
