I should've put this in the Mac Accessories but I didn't, OK? I got this little wifi/bluetooth mouse that came with nMP 2019. Sometimes it sucks. So yesterday I decided to check it's battery level. 42%. OK so I plug it into a usb-cable to charge it. An hour later it's like 45%. 2 hours later it's 48%. I change cables. Something's not right. I leave it over night. 18 hours. It's at 60%. I mean WTF???

I normally have hated these mice. I like them attached with the cord to the USB socket. Sometimes it's awkward. And when this mouse works well it's great. But then it slows down. Or starts swiping when I didn't swipe. Argh. Solutions out there?

Apple has a long history of making "terrific" mice, ranging from the beloved hockey-puck, and spanning 20+ years of strangely-shaped lozenge-style mice which are -- let me be kind and not have the forum software auto-edit/censor me and just call them -- terrible, and almost unusable from an ergonomic standpoint (in my humble opinion).

My honest best advice is toss it (or don't even open it and throw it in a drawer like I did), and get a real mouse like Logitech's decades-long evolution of the Darth Vader mouse which Just Works and fits my hand correctly :)

This is nice (in my subjective opinion):

This is a history of iconic designs that probably live in Guggenheim's collection of computer mice (but are all complete garbage to actually use ;-)

Unlike many, I don't have a violent psychotic reaction to Apple's trackpads -- they work fine for me -- or the latest wireless "magic" keyboard, which I strongly prefer vs. the current fetish for mechanical switches and old-school keyboards I grew up with, and feel 0 nostalgia for personally.

tl;dr: invest another $75-$100 and get a better mouse because Apple's tend to be terrible?

To actually answer your question: IDK, sounds like the battery in your mouse is pre-broken in some way? I charge the trackpad and keyboard, while I've never timed it they both hit 100% pretty fast and stay charged for a week - 10 days, despite the fact that I never turn them off, and my workstation never sleeps and is always on (only the display shuts off after a period of inactivity). I couldn't tell you how the mouse which comes with the Mac Pro behaves, because I've never even opened the bag.

Did you try another USB port? There are some stories here that a recent update knocked out one of the top USB ports for some people.

Well I WAS plugged into a hub. I'm thinking that might have had something to do with it. I will try again with a thunderbolt to whatever that's called that plugs into the mouse.

Your mouse will charge a *lot* faster if you hook it up to a port capable of delivering a bit more power than a hub typically does (esp. if it's an unpowered one). Try one of the ports on the mac itself or a port on a XDR display or so: you can go from a completely dead mouse into a working one for hours in the time it takes to get a coffee. Leave it once a month or so overnight to get recharged and you're good to go.

There's only one thing I hate about these mice: the place for that lightning connector should be put so it could be used while charging, for the rest: these are great, precise and their touch surface is one of their best assets.

That mouse looks really cool. But it might be over qualified. It looks like a gaming mouse? But I have no problem pulling the trigger for $100. I see some listed at $700. I can't imagine spending that much on a mouse. OK, so I can imagine making beacoup bucks where that job entails ALL DAY and night jamming, tearing and wearing your mouse apart, it might be worth it to invest in a high end mouse.

So you stand by this mouse?

The mouse was just an example, but yes personally I love the Logitech MX (they're at MX Master 3 at this point). They've been making them since the 2000s and I love the metal/magnetic super-fast scroll-wheel and haven't been able to switch back to another mouse without it in roughly 15 years (that would be about 4 models ago... Looking it up, the version I started with was their initial release, the MX Revolution in 2006, so only 14 years).

It's not a gaming mouse, if you look at prices online it sells for between $85 - $99. If you want a super-expensive gaming or special-purpose mouse I'm sure you can pay $700 but I've personally never needed that. The mouse I linked is at most $100, which is what it sells for on Amazon right now.

If you want to try it, you can always order it, see if you like it, and send it back if not. Normally I'd say just visit the nearest Best Buy and touch it for yourself, but I think non-essential businesses in most states have shut down within the US, or are about to.

I personally love the Logitech because the scroll wheel is awesome, it has many buttons you can map to anything you want (or ignore them, and just plug it in), it fits my hand perfectly and feels very comfortable from an ergonomic perspective. Having said that, this is me and my hand, and you may not feel exactly the same, I used it as an example of an excellent mouse (in my opinion).

I've never been a fan of any of Apple's mice and found them mostly awful, but that's subjective and only my opinion, there are people who probably love them.

EDIT: Mouse is gone from Amazon, back in stock in 9 more days. B&H Photo has it in stock still:

I also am delighted with the Logitech MX. Currently using the MX2 version. It is nice to connect to the Mac through bluetooth without having two mess with USB dongles. I find it a lot more comfortable in use to the Apple Magic Mouse.

+1 for the MX Master series, I am currently using a 2 and it is shared between 3 devices, PC, mbp, iPad Pro.

I have to resurrect this old thread of mine. I love the MX-3, but the last couple of days it's been dogging and getting stuck, sticky a lot. I may I have solved the problem already, but I tohught I'd run it past you experts here. I reset the little USB dongle. It's better. Is there a procedure you guys use if it starts dying? I've charge it, turne dit off back on. Then reset the wireless dongle.

And to play it safe I ordered a back up.

You are entitled to your opinion ... I have multiples of both MM1 and MM2 ... love them - use them on all of my Macs. Try using gestures on those other mouse devices... how's that work for ya?

And battery life is pretty good, IMO. Sure, Timmy and Jony screwed up by putting the charge port on the bottom, but a quick 2-3 minute charge gets another hour or two of use - enough to get me to a lunch break, a meeting or end of the day.

I remember. years ago, when I first started using Logitech mouses (mice?), I had a similar problem. I found the range for the unifying receiver to be short. My mouse sits on a mouse pad on a metal tray extension beside my keyboard. My fix was to attach the dongle to a USB cable and tape the dongle to the bottom of the mouse tray so it's positioned right below the mouse. Haven't updated the receiver or had an issue since.

Ah! Ok. I get it. I’ll do that tomorrow.
