I left the new PB charging all day to make sure I didn't mischarge the battery and screwup its lifecycle like the manual tells you.

However, when I unplugged it after about 8 hours it showed a lifespan of about 4 hrs and 3minutes initially. 3 minutes later that was downgraded to 2.5 hours of life, then 2.2. Then when I turned down the brightness (full brightness before) it went up just below 3 hours.

I thought the new line of PBs got an extra hour of juice left? This is on par with what my 2 year old 12" PB got after months of use.

Will the battery get better with a couple of depletions/charges?

I always found the time estimator very unreliable. Just let it run and see how it goes. Isn't the advertised battery life when you get if you just word process the whole time?

Screw the battery, what does it look like? Post some shots if you can. ;)

Try running the battery down a re-charging it once or twice at first (to calibrate it). Also, (you'll probably know but) it will depend on what you're doing with it. Just leaving it on screensaver with no apps open will make it last longer, as will having it on minimum power setting/processor setting (You've already seen the benefits of turning down the brightness). The battery should last up to and hour longer but that doesn't necessarily mean it will...

As mentioned in this post, to really achive full use of the batteri and it's potential you have to charge --> use the juice! --> charge --> use the juice! a couple of times.

It's the same thing with mobile phones.

Use the juice = suck it dry!

Plus, remember that your 15 inch screen is much bigger and brighter than the 12 inch one so understandably it'll go through more juice.

I wouldn't worry about it for now. If it's still giving lacklustre uptime after a week or so then maybe call Apple. You won't get 5.5 hours though. :(
