So I took my iPhone off its charger at about 9.30 this morning, only to be down under 25% by about 1pm. I know we are to expect the battery to only be so-so, but that seems horrid to me.

Some notes about my usage this morning...
The backlight was only set to half for most of the time, when I was in church (used the new Bible App! Sweet!) the backlight was at minimum for about 2+hrs of that time.

I was on a WiFi network for at least 60% of the time.

I had the phone fetch email every 30minutes (gmail needs to get push added! and now switched down to hourly :().

For a total of about an hour I was using it to play music through my car speakers (stereo cable, no FM transmitter or the like).

And that is pretty much it. I only had 3G service for about 2 hrs during that time (the building I was in had horrid reception, for any phone. Hence the connection to the WiFi).

So, all this seems like normal to light usage in my mind. What else can I check to improve battery life? Generally, I have been putting the phone in my logitech speaker docks to play music and to charge the phone, so I haven't had it up and die on me yet, but this seems like some pretty wretched battery life.

Any tips would be appreciated!

Have you done a full discharge yet? If not:

1. Run your iPhone until it dies from lack of power.
2. Plug your iPhone in and do not unplug it until it is completely full (the charge icon will change to include a plug).
3. Run your iPhone until it dies from lack of power.
4. Charge it fully once more.

You should now get maximum battery life out of your phone.

okay, I will give that a shot tonight. Charged to full and have gone through half the battery in about 2.5hrs from a full charge. Rawk.

In the same boat

I've been having similar problems since I upgraded to firmware 2.0 yesterday morning. (1st Gen iPhone, 4GB capacity, no hacks or jailbreaks, bought in September of last year, never any problems before now.)

Before the firmware upgrade, I'd go all day and still have almost a full charge by the time I got home at night. Now, the battery was dead just a few hours after upgrading to 2.0, and after a full charge last night, it was dead again earlier this evening.

FWIW, I'm also a .Mac / Mobile Me user and was able to sync all my contacts, calendar, etc., but I set it to only sync once an hour, which shouldn't drain the battery that badly.

I'm following the instructions above to rule out any battery "memory" issues, but I can't help but wonder if the 2.0 and/or Mobile Me upgrade had anything to do with it.

Any ideas?

Interesting... I too have MobileMe...

Though I don't see anywhere that gives me the option to sync less often. I thought the idea of push (for Mail, Contacts and Calendar) where that the phone only needed to get data when new data was available, not at specified intervals.

Hey, I'll take lower battery life for the faster data speed, LANDLINE QUALITY voice, and MOST IMPORTANTLY!!! NO MORE SPEAKER NOISES COMING FROM MY PHONE!! Every time I turn off 3G I get those annoying speaker noises that all the AT&T EDGE phones make... LOL
