I opened my MBA 13 2010 ultimate in the morning from sleep, and after using it for a while it had 58% battery life.

When I came home from school, i waked it up again from sleep and the battery life was 39%

Is something wrong with my MBA? I closed it at 7:45 in the morning and I waked it up at 4:30 in the afternoon

Also: Time machine backup drive was connected etc.

also did you check the box that says "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in System Pref>Energy Saver

Try testing it without the external drive plugged in as that is likely sucking the power, Have you noticed this problem before? After an hour the MBA goes into deep sleep that let's it last 30 days so that amount of draining just doesn't seem right

This is because it enters deep sleep after one hour.

Also, I unplugged my external drive, so I'm gonna see if it helps tonight

The external drive is likely drawing battery. I know even while the MBA is put to sleep, I can charge my phone connected to it.

Im sorry because i use to have the first macbook air but i've never noticed that and sold it for the 13" 2010 MBP

Sorry i think i may have misguided you.

Checking the tick box that says "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is not really helpful since i guess that it will only applies to external hard drives because the hard drive in the MBA is an SSD.

Sleep drain: You may notice the battery in your Apple portable may drain up to 1% per hour (24% per day) while the computer is in sleep mode. This is normal behavior.

It's also possible that it didn't stay asleep the whole time.

I sometimes forget to unplugged my Magsafe, and it charges for the whole night, while it is sometimes in sleep mode. Is that also altering performance?

Apple advertises up to 30 days standby for the late 2k10 Air. Yes, I'm aware of that. That's why I suggested it may have not been in sleep mode the whole time.

70 cycles in 22 weeks, is it too much usage?

Should I keep it plugged more often?
When would the battery start degrading?

Under normal usage (mainly web surfing with a bit of youtube), I can't even get close to the advertised 7 hours of battery time.

These batteries are rated to retain 80% of their charge through the first 1000 cycles. Keeping it plugged in is fine as long as you use it off of the power adapter occasionally.

As for not getting 7 hours, use AdBlocker and ClickToFlash for increasing web browsing time.

I do use it quite often off the power adapter, in fact almost every day, for a good few hours every time. I use Chrome with FlashBlock installed and I use HTML5 for YouTube , but still, not getting 7 hours.

Does instant messaging eat up the battery quickly? (Adium text-only, not voice calls like Skype)

My 3,1 11' drained 5% of battery overnight (12h)... I disabled bluetooth now to see if that helps. It believe it would not last for 30 days as advertised in standby.

Do mac people not understand hibernation which has been on windows laptops for years? Essentially it will last the same period as it would last turned off. Its not some iPadization of the mac.
hibernation is not standby. Standby keeps the ram powered, hibernation writes to the hd and turns of all power afterwards.

I believe that you will never going to get 7 hours with youtube, but I did a test and I got exactly 8 hours and 6 minutes (50% brightness, WiFi on and working on word/excel/email and internet of course)
I'm so happy with my new MBA 11" 64GB
