Houston (duh)
Anyone else have this? I think it's the meter and software, not hardware, but curious if it's a unique issue.

I've let it run all the way to zero before to try and reset it not long ago when I had this same issue after a charge and it then said "96%" after all night.

Note: this is a full night on the 10w charger, not USB.

My wife's never has this issue.

It's not an issue its completely normal. Battery charge meters are never 100% accurate despite what people may try and tell you.

My iPhone does this fairly frequently as does one of my camera batteries.

Yes, my 64gig 3G version also does this... happened twice so far.
In the morning when I unplug it says 99% or 98%. =(
But, I've been charging it with my original iphone usb charger.
Not sure if it's any different from the 10W ipad charger that's included.
Will try that one tonight.

Just recharged my iPad with the 10watt iPad charger.
No problems charging up to 100%.

I dunno if this is true for iPad, but my MacBook Pro and my iPhone charge to 100%, then run down to 97-98% and then go back up again. A similar thing could be happening here?

Just make sure you use the charger AND cable that came with your iPad. Not sure why the cable matters, but it seems to for me. iPad charger plus my iPhone3G cable != good combination and it takes forever to charge.

Don't lose any sleep over it. If you are really concerned take it in to an Apple store or call Applecare. I bet they say its fine and a normal battery variance.

The iPad battery chip probably does something similar to that of the Mac; that is, it will fully charge and stop charging to let the battery drain to approximately 90% or something to prevent the battery from overcharging.

My macbook sometimes stops charging when it gets to about 99%.

Can't explain why but all batteries do it from time to time.

I'm noticing the same thing. Here's what I'm finding:

Wi-Fi on, 3G off = 100% charge by morning.

3G on, wi-fi off = 100% charge by morning.

Wi-Fi on, 3G on = 98% charge by morning.

I'm getting the feeling that the iPad can handle the drain of either wi-fi or 3G all night, but if you've got both 'on' it can't get that last 4% over the hump in the 6 hours its charging overnight. And before someone asks "why would anyone need both wi-fi and 3G on at the same time?" the answer is: Push email.

NO I keep both on and show 100% ... I can surf for 10 minutes sometimes and still show 100% so the meter is off or there is battery variance.

I've got an AT&T MicroCell which gives me stellar in-home 3G reception, so its odd that this is happening to me. I guess it's time to return my iPad to the Apple store and get a fresh one that doesn't have this percentage problem.

You need an extra-elite version that shows 101%. :D

Have you all with the meter issues tried letting the battery run completely down, until it shuts itself off, then recharging? Apple suggests this once per month, and I have found that if my battery meter seems off this corrects it. Give it a try before exchanging or repair trip, can't hurt.

Seriously?

Exactly. If I show up for work in the morning and I'm not at 100% on the meter before the girl fetches my coffee and laundry, people will think I'm to0 cheap to charge the thing fully. Not happening.
