I noticed this weekend on a friends 10R that there is no option in the battery settings to enable the battery % (it is only available in control center).

Why was this done? Seems like a stupid thing to get rid of? Did they run out of potential space with the notch?

Showing battery percentage was optional with earlier iPhones and when available space was reduced Apple figured they'd go with the battery icon rather than percentage.

Apple's thinking here is probably that the percentage induces unnecessary anxiety and OCD-like behavior over the battery charge. Plus, a battery icon's purpose is clear. A percentage without a battery icon is ambiguous, especially considering the proximity of cellular / wifi icons.

or it made people like me think when they get into the single digits, ok i better find a charger soon. I frantically plugged my phone in at 1% so many time because I hate to completely kill my battery.

You can swipe down from the top-right and the battery percentage will be visible there.

You'll also get a notification for Low Power Mode if your battery is less than 20%, and then another notification once the battery hits 10%. The battery icon will also turn red rather than being green, and will be yellow if you’re on Low Power Mode.

If you still haven't plugged in, when you're on 1% the phone will get massively laggy for a minute before it dies.

And if you still haven't plugged in to charge... well, you've ignored a fair few obvious cues to do so. :D

If you do care about your phone's Li-Ion battery you aim to keep it between 20% and 80% charge most of the time. That's why at 20% the battery icon changes to red and you get a warning dialog, and why low power mode turns off at 80% when charging.

It's also why Apple is introducing the battery optimization feature with iOS 13 to maximize the time your phone stays at 80% during, for example, overnight charges.

I actually like that it doesn't show the percentage on the notched phones. I worry less about my battery.
I think they made it because there simply isn't enough room to add it.

I feel like there is enough room. There’s a lot of space between bars, WiFi, and battery. And the left side is even worse, has only the time and location icon. So much wasted space.

Same on the home screen on plus devices. So much space between the icons.

So you want everything to be cranked up? I think the current placement of icons is perfect.

Yes I would like one more row of icons on the home screen. There’s a lot of gap between the first row and the status bar. And a big gap between the bottom and dock.
