I've had my iPhone since the near beginning and have treated the battery with the proper care. I let the battery run down to the 10% left mark before fully recharging it.
I normally get around 5 hours of general purpose use (this includes, some email checking/writing, some internet surfing, some calling and a little iPod use).
Well my problem is that now, within the last few charges, the use has gone down considerably. I'm now somewhere around 3.5 hours of batter life for the same type of use.
Is anyone else having this problem? The only thing new I've done is to update the phone to the new 1.1.1 version. could that have anything to do with diminished battery life?
Anything I might be missing here?

NOTE-my battery has always shown the full charge "plug" and never suffered from any of the other early battery problems I have read about on this forum.

I was having the same problem. I just took mine to an apple store today & they swapped it out with a new one right there.

I had the same issue, apple replaced the phone, and I had the same battery issues with the new phone as well. Eventually, they had me do a restore but restore as "new phone" rather than from backup, and that seems to have resolved the battery issues.

Not only has apple managed to kill 3rd party apps and unlocked phones, they also managed to kill batteries of updated phones! Nice going apple!
