My battery died today after three hours and forty four minutes use and just over nine of standby.

Are all of the iphones this bad with battery life?
this is waaaay under the six hours advertised for internet time

just swapped mine out on tuesday for the same reason. i think its a problem inherent to Li Ion batteries. They will want to take your phone for 2-3 days to test it, though. I was lucky and got mine replaced on the spot. Maybe you can do what I did- wear scrubs and tell them you're a doctor and on call.

Fist make sure Bluetooth and WiFi are off if you are not using it. IF you are using WiFi its much more efficient than Edge though when it comes to battery life.

Also, try charging via USB if you have not. I have horrible life using the wall charger and some are known to be defective.

I had my last iPhone replaced for the exact same reason so I wasn't sure if this is typical. Mine was replaced in the spot last time..

My Bluetooth is off but would wifi (not in use) really cause a loss of 2+ hours of battery?

State of Denial
I was always concerned that mine never really lived up till today.

8 hours and 5 mins of USE and the 20% warning still hadn't come on.

The phone was in Airplane mode for about 4 hours of that time. I watched 7 episodes of Heros (getting caught up on season 1) listed to music while wandering through the terminals.

A few phone calls, VM and a little browsing.

I have to say, as an iPod it lasts a lot longer then I thought. My normal day doesn't afford me the time to watch and listen as Im actually on the phone and sending emails and I'm luckly to pull 6 hours off the thing.

Drain your battery and then charge it all the way back up in a single charge. See what happens.

7 hours 7 minutes usage, WiFi on but not connected, email checking via EDGE every 15 minutes, light internet use (about 20 minutes) via EDGE, iPod audio playing most of that time.

Result - maybe 20% battery used, ie. 80% remaining.

You better bet it does. When its on, but not connected, it sucks power a lot! Its the same with the cellular radio.

In both radios, they poll the area to find a tower AT FULL POWER. But when connected, they reduce power unless the signal gets weak. The stronger the signal, the less power is wasted in polling. Now if your running tons of data at full signal, well then too you loose power anyway but thats expected with usage.

I noticed with 1.1.1 that the active polling is crazy, I pick up random hot spots a lot more.

My battery lasts between 4 1/2 to 5 hours of continuous use and this is my second phone. The battery in my first phone overheated after 2 months so they gave me a new phone.

I keep mine plugged in the USB charger while I'm driving and plugged into the USB dock when I'm at home. Does this diminish battery life faster?

I charged my iPhone fully last nite and my usage is 16 minuets and 6 hours 38 mins standby and I've just had the 20% warning as I type this. My Wi-Fi doesn't actually work, in the settings menu it simply says "No Wi-Fi" so I could assume that it has been continually at full power for no reason, would this explain the terrible battery life?
While I was at work I don't get a very good reception, so I assume the iPhone has been transmitting at high power to keep the network connection.

My first iphone had horrible battery life (didn't last through the day with almost no usage). I had it replaced with a new one and I have no battery problems at all. Is it great? Not compared to a small and simple, non-wifi/edge phone, but for what it does it's pretty damn good. I now charge every other day when the battery shows a little less than half, If I let it go, I could probably squeeze in another day but then it would be dead. I use the phone part 3-4 times a day (maybe 1 hr of calling/day, wifi perhaps 1 1/2 hour/day, listen to music a few hours/day, don't use edge, check email quite frequently but manually - I haven't counted usage, so these are guesses, but generally I don't feel limited by the battery anymore.

With moderate use I'd say you should be getting more like 2-3 days standby and perhaps 5-6hrs usage. It varies of course, but yours is definitely very low.

Since I wrote my last post (about 50 minutes ago I think) the battery was at 20%, I have barely used my phone (if at all). I just picked it up to use it and it was dead. This isn't exactly the battery life I hoped for.
But, seeing as I'm in the UK with an imported and unlocked iPhone, I don't see any chance of a replacement :(

Not that you should have to, but given the circumstances, perhaps you should try one of the third party battery replacement services - or order a battery anf get somebody to installed it locally?

While Apple may have the 'right' to not service phones that have been unlocked, this battery problem obviously has NOTHING to do with any of that. It's amazing that Apple has successfully managed to save probably millions by voiding the hardware warranty of those who have unlocked.

Good luck with your phone, hope it works out.
