Battery Puffy? MacBook Pro Early 2015

Hi I’ve opened up my wife’s old MBP 13” Early 2015. The batteries seem a little “puffy” - is that normal for these batteries (i.e. do they have a bubble or air layer to protect them or something)?

No its noy and a swelling battery can be dangerous, I'd take it to apple to replace ASAP.

I had a puffy battery on my 2008 MacBook Pro and it was out of warranty. I took it to the Apple Store, they looked at it, took it out back, and brought it back to me with a new battery in it. I asked them how much and they told me, "No charge." I recommend that you do the same, even if they charge you.

If you have the time, consider reading up on how Lithium Ion batteries are made and how they work. This will explain why they have fire or explosive risk under certain circumstances. These things can even bring down a plane which is why there are some restrictions on transportation of the batteries.

Take this to a brick-n-mortar Apple Store RIGHT AWAY and show it to them.
Don't wait!
They just might replace it, free of charge.

Even if they don't offer to "do it free", it's worth paying to get it replaced.
I believe the charge is $199 which includes parts AND labor.
Make sure you have full disclosure about the cost before you hand it over to them!

BTW, I personally don't think that they should allow you to take it away from the store in that condition. It's like a mechanic checking the brakes on a car, find that they don't work and letting the customer drive away without repairs. Towing it away, yes. Driving? No.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've booked in with the local Apple Store. Scary part is I wouldn't have discovered this if my wife's SSD hadn't freaked out and I had to replace.

You probably would discovered this sooner or later. When the battery expands it puts pressure on the top case containing the keyboard, trackpad, Al case where your hand rests, etc. Sooner or later that expansion leads to failure of the one of those components.

Apple will likely do a top case replacement containing all the parts above since the battery is glued to all of this. I think it is $199 when it is battery related, which is a bargain for what you get and the potential dire consequences of dealing with a battery out-gassing. Maybe you will get lucky and they will do it for free since her machine is relatively new.

My 2015 battery swelled too. Took it to Apple for repair.
