i tend to use my MBP at night time and not during the day. the question is what should i do with it during the 8-10 hrs while i am at work. shut it down, turn it off, or something else. i want to save battery life but dont want to turn down brightness. i have read several threads about battery life but still would like an answer for my particular situation.

You should be fine leaving it plugged in asleep. Battery usage is minimal and won't harm the computer.

Plugged or unplugged is fine...most people leave them plugged in so that they're fully charged for the next day, but there's no harm in leaving it unplugged, as long as the battery doesn't run out while it's asleep. And even that's not a disaster...it just means you'll have to plug it in and wake it (or restart if the juice is really gone) before you can use it.
