battery replacement - cost and turn around time

Hey guys.

It looks like my wife's 1 year old 3G iPhone's battery is toast - not holding a charge, and running out of juice extremely quickly.

Anyways as far as I can tell it will cost me 80 bucks - is that accurate?

Also is this something the apple store geniuses can do? Finally what's the general turn around time?

This is why I HATE non replaceable batteries. worst case, my wife will be w/o a phone for a period of time, perhaps one or two weeks.[/rant]

If the geniuses can do it in short order that will be the best case scenario.

$80 is a lot.......usually you can find a repair shop that can do it for around $60 or so.....its actually an pretty straight forward swap....I suggest googling iphone repair and see what pops up in your area...

Thanks, I'll do that. I didn't realize a cottage industry sprouted up repairing/replacing parts on the iPhone. I thought it was apple only.

I've done over a dozen battery replacements my own included, if you sent a battery to me with your phone I would be more than happy to do it for no fee. PM me if your interested so you we can talk about it! I found a great vendor that sells extended capacity batteries for $13 mine works phenominally.

They'll fix it and ship it the same day. So if you FedEx it overnight on Monday, for example, you'll get it back around lunchtime on Wednesday.

Looks like they're currently charging $39 for it. (You pay for shipping in addition to that).

Honestly, I'd rather do this every other year or so than have to buy a user replaceable battery. It'd make the phone thicker and/or the battery life worse. So my phone wouldn't work as well and I'm sure Apple would still charge $80 or $90 for a replaceable battery so it's not like it'd be cheaper.

I'm still not seeing the logic. The nexus offers a larger battery 1400 mAh battery and a replacement one is only 25 bucks.

The logic is that the iPhone's battery is size x. The case you'd have to build it to be removable is size y. So a removable battery is size x+y. The current iPhone battery is only size x. There's no way around it. You either make the phone bigger or the battery smaller.

It's as simple as that.

The Nexus has nothing to do with the iPhone. All it means is that the Nexus COULD have been built even smaller, but they decided not to do that.

As for the cost, this is Apple we're talking about it. There's no way they'd charge less than $59 for it. I'm just certain of that.

Agreed, I mentioned the nexus because they were successful in getting a battery that has a higher capacity in nearly the same form factor as the iPhone and its removable. My point is that apple has the where with all to design a phone that looks good, and has a decent battery.

As for the cost, this is Apple we're talking about it. There's no way they'd charge less than $59 for it. I'm just certain of that.

I agree with you 100%, I'm not that concerned about the price, like you said its apple after all. Rather the need to be without a phone,which is not feasible for my wife. I did find a local person to do it for 60 bucks and in 15 minutes.

Cool. I shipped my phone away and suffered for 2 days.

The next week, my laptop (which I CAN live without) needed a repair and I found a guy who MADE HOUSE CALLS and came to me to fix it! Crazy. I guess I did that backwards.

Cool. I shipped my phone away and suffered for 2 days.

My wife is unemployed and cannot be without a phone at this stage. She's dealing with head hunters, prospective employers, etc etc. The last thing we want is to a call for an interview/job offer and not have the phone.
