Other Battery Replacement

For those who have had their iphone’s battery replaced under Apple’s battery replacement program for $30, how long has it taken? I know it will vary from store to store, but looking for a general idea here. My iPhone 7’s battery is at 85%, so I made an appointment for this upcoming Thursday at 12:25, and I’m just wanting to know how long I should expect to wait.

Had one replacement done a few days ago and another just yesterday--the first one took about 1.5 hours and the other one took just a little over 1 hour (this is for iPhone 7, in case some other models might take a little longer if there's more to disassemble or replace).

I think about an hour is more or less the best that can be expected given the work that's needed, but part of it might depend on how busy things are and the techs they have that day, so that's why it might go a little longer.

I have an appointment for this Friday for my 6S Plus and my wife's 6S, I think they run a diagnostic test first to see if the replacement is warranted, anyone had this happen? I also asked a month ago at the store if I can keep my currently installed OS and was told I can, will see if that holds true. I'd like to keep 10.3.3/10.3.1 on our two phones.

Just keep in mind that if they have to replace your phone for some technical fault while replacing the battery then they will give you a new device with updated OS.

They run a diagnostic which takes just a few minutes to see how things are, but whether or not the diagnostic shows a replacement is needed they will replace it anyway (for $29) if that's what you want.

No questions were asked about the iOS version that's installed on the two phones I took in. However one was on the latest iOS 12.1.1 and one was close to it with iOS 12.1.

Right. I should have mentioned that I'm aware of that, meant to add that me being ok with iOS 12 - it saved my iPad Air 1 - means even if my phone dies on the table I'll be ok with 12 on a new device, a feeling I didn't get with iOS 11.

Thanks for the info, I’m also taking my wife’s 6S in this week. I assumed we’d have to leave it overnight.
 
Back from my appointment today. Apple genius wrecked my back camera during the replacement of the battery and they gave me a new 6S Plus for the price of the battery. I went in with the expectation that something might happen, and also that if it did I’d be ok with iOS 12 seeing what it did to help my iPad Air. So far so good on 12.0.1, surprisingly fast in fact. I lost a 32 bit weather app I’ve been using since my 3GS days sadly (was so old they’d stopped serving ads to it so I got spoiled) but otherwise I feel pretty good. Miffed at apples signing practices again a bit but that’s how it goes...

I have a question about iOS on refurbished phones - do they leave the store with what they were built with, or do they get updated periodically, does anyone know? I was gonna DFU this thing to 12.1 or whatever but after setting my apps up from scratch and being happy I’m tempted to leave it as is if it’s got a factory installed OS on board.
 
I’m actually quite surprised by the number of cases we see here of geniuses breaking devices while replacing the battery. This is pretty alarming.

Trouble is you are far more likely to hear of people that have had issues. Me and my wife had batteries replaced earlier in the year. Both went smooth as butter.

I took my X in on the 21st to have the battery replaced and it was broken during the battery replacement and of course I was given a replacement X for free since I still have 11 months of AppleCare+ left. I wasn’t upset until I got home and it wouldn’t charge past 80%. It finally started charging past 80% after 10am this morning.

Burlington, MA Apple Store. October 2016 iPhone 7 with battery capacity in the mid-80% range. Genius appointment at 1:20 Saturday 12/22. Genius took the phone at 1:30 and I had it back in hand before 2:30. Fabulous service, especially considering the holiday traffic and the approaching end of the program.

Looks like we are back on a streak of good repairs which is good. I have to say, and I’m heavily in the Don’t Upgrade iOS Club, iOS 12 is amazing so far on my 6S Plus. Apple killed my 10.3.3 one and the replacement on iOS 12 not only seems at least as fast but it also fixed my two huge gripes - texts dismissing during quick reply and that annoying downward swipe when I’d return to the home screen via 3D Touch and tap an icon. I got a brand new phone for $40 sporting an iOS that seems fantastic. I don’t even think I’d go back to 9.3.5 if I (dead horse alert...) could.
