I have an iPhone 8 which I purchased new 6 months ago. Battery health just dropped to 93% and I am already getting the 'service ' notification that the battery is significantly degraded. Surely that can't be right? I switched the phone off and on again in case it was a glitch but nothing changed.

Coconut Battery reports the battery health as 90% and cycle count 197 which should still be easily good enough not to trigger the service indicator.

Thoughts?

Probably, since the iPhone 8 hasn't been produced in a while as far as I'm aware, this was sitting in a warehouse somewhere for a while, and maybe the battery degraded during that time (battery degrades even if not on use).

Since it is 6 months old, I'd take it to Apple for warranty. They'll replace if faulty and will also try to verify if there is anything that could be causing the situation.

Sounds like a defective battery. Apple will replace it under warranty especially if the "service" notification came on at 93% capacity.. They should be able to replace it in about an hour in store with an appointment..

Well I didn't buy from Apple unfortunately it was a third party retailer in the Philippines. I do agree that the battery is shot Coconut Battery says it is more than 3 years old and my wife corrected me I have been using the phone for at least 10 months. So it is either battery replacement or buy a new SE (I like small form factor and home button).

Did you verify if Apple shows the phone as under warranty? https://checkcoverage.apple.com if you bought it from a 3rd party authorized retailer it may be under Apple warranty, but the phone likely was manufactured several years before you bought it.
Regardless, it’s worth replacing the battery with a genuine one from Apple.

Coconut Battery indicates phone was manufactured in July 2018 and the battery is circa the same date so I assume the original fit. I will give it a shot to verify the warranty just for the hell of it but I know what the answer will be. I charged the phone to 100% last night at 11pm and since then light use in Gmail, WhatsApp (including a video call), phone calls and texts. It is now 5pm and still have 31% maybe I will stick with it for a while until I actually see issues manifesting. I do feel more inclined to use this as an excuse to buy a new SE :)
