I have just finished my quest with Quake 4 in 5 days. Best game I have ever played. Now I am looking for another one to accompany me. I am trying to choose between these too. I am leaning more towards Enemy Territory, but not sure if Battlefield 2142 is worth a try, any feedback? I am going to be playing multiplayer with these games.

Although both are class-based sci-fi "team warfare" games, they have very different play styles from what I understand. Reports I've read tend to lean towards people liking Quake Wars better. But there are definitely people who like BF better--it just depends on what kind of play appeals to you.

I personally decided to wait for QW and not get BF--and I'm liking Quake Wars a lot! (But I must say BF's Titan mode sounds cool.)

My impression, having never played BF, is that QW concentrates the fighting on one area at a time, moving across the map from objective to objective, whereas BF's action is more spread out, and therefore can mean some boring wandering around. But don't take my word for this.

If you like both play styles equally, I'd go with Quake Wars: it's newer, doesn't rely on Cider, and supports widescreen gaming. (IIRC, BF2142 and other recent EA titles don't, amazingly enough.) Also, BF is all humans, but QW has humans vs. Strogg, and cool Strogg vehicles/weapons. For instance, remember the bug-like attack aircraft in Quake 4? In Quake Wars you can hop in those and pilot them.

Here's a sarcastic, biased video comparison:

And this text article is based on early versions I think, but FWIW:

I have played 1942, its definitly spread out, no objectives almost, just shoot the germans...

I didn't like that, no radio contact, or anything. Plain boring, I was hoping 2142 is different. I'm mainly going to play multiplayer, thats for sure.

But after playing Quake 4, I seem to be leaning more towards Quake Wars.

EDIT: How does Quake wars gameplay compare to Quake 4? And is the multiplayer like an open field? as in is it BIG? Like would the BF multiplayer be like the quake wars multilplayer?

So I need an intense multiplayer battlefield, thats big.

I havent played Quake Wars, but from what I hear it is like Unreal Tournament. And if it is, it is frantic, run around and shoot people kind of game. I dont mind UT, but i enjoy more strategic combat.
Battlefield 2142 is more strategic, but is still a run around and shoot the enemy type game. Im personally getting fed up with BF2142, mostly because the OS X version sucks, and I hate running it on Bootcamp. :S
Im going to try quake wars, it seems great.

Quake Wars is very strategic--that's where the endless variety comes from. However, ONE of the roles you can take on (and sometimes a necessary one) is frantic shooting :)

But there's a lot more to it than that. Aside from basic in-your-face combat, other roles/tasks include:

Setting up defenses under cover
Attacking long-range by rocket launcher
Attacking long-range by sniping
Attacking long-range by calling in airstrikes, artillery and missiles
Spying on the enemy with binoculars, radar and remote cameras
Sabotaging enemy equipment (disguise optional)
Silent sneaky stealth attacks (disguise and back-stab optional)
Planting proxy mines, laser-tripmines, timed explosives, and remote-trigger bombs
Placing various kinds of auto-turrets, energy shields, smokescreens, etc. to help your team
Healing wounded teammates and re-supplying ammo
Reviving fallen teammates
Capturing spawnpoints or creating new ones
Repairing vehicles and equipment
Driving land vehicles and boats
Flying aircraft
Building bridges, towers and other objectives
Piloting remote flyer drones
Parachuting out of transport aircraft
Hacking enemy computers to open doors or disable equipment
Defusing enemy bombs and mines
Delivering items from one place to another
Shooting the tires off of enemy vehicles so they don't roll straight :)

And you have a lot of room for creativity in all of the above. Maybe the mission is to plant explosives, but you can find new ways to approach that, etc.

Now, you ARE on the clock--hurrying is important. But between spawn waves you have time to think of your next tactic or attack.

Well I've only played the Quake Wars demo. I've played a LOT of bf 2142 though.

I can tell you that 2142 is a great game. But the mac version sucks.

If you're not interested in using boot camp, then go for quake wars.

One thing that I don't like about 2142 though is that once I reached the highest rank, the game started to get... boring. This has happened to me several times before in other games. I work really really hard to reach the goal I want and then once I reach it... I feel like I have a lot less incentive to play.

I can't get any more unlocks in 2142, and I've stopped playing it.

Quake Wars, on the other hand, doesn't save your unlocks between games. Each "campaign" shares the unlocks (you start with none and have to gain them) and then u lose them at the end of the campaign. The unlocks are easy enough to get though that it's doable over the course of a single campaign.

I really think you should just get the demos for both games and try them out. Even though I think the 2142 demo still leaves something to be desired, it's gonna give you a relatively good idea of the game. (in the 2142 demo you can't get any unlocks... and that includes the defibrillator, which is the first unlock you should probably choose and changes the game A LOT, because now medics can revive people. That, and you can't unlock grenades in the demo either. Though the demo was fun, it was a completely different game when I bought it lol because of the revives and the grenades).

Oh, and I didn't really like the vehicles in the quake wars demo as much as i like the 2142 vehicles.

If you don't want to play the demos though... then i'd actually recommend getting quake wars

(btw you'll need to run windows for both demos)

I remember you mentioned that you can be a medic in Quake wars, I'd like to ask marclapierre13, isn't that the same in BF2142 as well?

I think its going to be Quake Wars. BF2142 somehow looks more pleasing to my eyes in the box, but I think it'll be Quake Wars in the end. I have been watching gameplays for each game on youtube, the BF2142 maps look so damn bland.

nagromme, how does quake wars compare to quake 4 in look and feel? I know Quake Wars takes place on earth.

Re booting Windows to try a game demo: it may not be a good test of performance, but it's good solution for seeing the game play. Finally, I have a use for Windows :)

Re QW vs. Q4 look/feel:

QuakeWars takes place a few years (?) earlier, and all the technology is a little older. The human gear is sort of halfway between present-day and Quake 4. (Which is cool--it makes it seem familiar and real.) The tanks for instance look basically like real tanks. Strogg weapons are older too: the Nailgun fires single bursts like a shotgun, and the Lightning gun is weaker. Railgun is great though :)

The Strogg don't have all the weird creatures--just humanoids, like the Marines and Tacticals in Q4. What'd neat is that most Strogg weapons and tools aren't handheld, they are built in to the right arm. And they are interchangeable: when you switch weapons, you change attachments for your arm. And you can see your other weapons slung across your back or attached to your belt.

In terms of structures, it's mostly human buildings, most of which are like the present day. Lots of concrete. But the Strogg have invaded so there are some Strogg elements here and there. The detail level varies--not in a way that's unrealistic, but some buildings are just very simple and free of clutter. Still, the characters and vehicles and the more complex structures look great, as good as Q4.

In terms of landscape, Q4's megatextures make the outdoors look a lot better than Q4. More variety and realism--it really feels like an endless real world rather than a fake rock canyon. And since it's earth, there are plants, snow, rain, oceans and other things giving a lot more variety than Q4 had outdoors. Water looks fantastic, depending on your settings.

In terms of lighting... Id's engine is at its best with a lot of shadow and darkness. That made Q4, Doom 3 and Prey look great. Most places in QW are better lit, or at least more evenly lit, which doesn't make the structures and interiors as pretty in my opinion. That doesn't bother me, but it's a different feel. Gritty realism, not slick sci-fi or spooky monsters.

In terms of effects, QW is awesome. The incoming missiles and Strogg deployables that drop from orbit in a pillar of fire are very cool. Most of the effects are fire or explosions of some form--not a lot of energy weapons--but they are neat. (There are some futuristic-type effects in the mix, like slipgates and force fields and teleporters.)

In terms of FEEL--game play--the feel is very different from Quake 4, because of the military realism elements. You can't take as many hits before dying, for instance, and (by default) friendly fire is on: you can harm your teammates if you're not careful. And you can lie on your stomach and crawl, for precision shooting and a low profile, or you can stand and lean just your head and gun around a corner. I like those realistic touches, but it's not the same feel as most Quake games.

Also, the different classes (medic, engineer, etc.) in Q4 have very distinct colored uniforms. At first, in QW, everyone looked alike to me! But before long you can tell people apart just fine.

can't believe I forget to mention this, but READ REVIEWS... professional reviews.

Read reviews for both games at sites like ign.com.
