Quake Wars is very strategic--that's where the endless variety comes from. However, ONE of the roles you can take on (and sometimes a necessary one) is frantic shooting
But there's a lot more to it than that. Aside from basic in-your-face combat, other roles/tasks include:
Setting up defenses under cover
Attacking long-range by rocket launcher
Attacking long-range by sniping
Attacking long-range by calling in airstrikes, artillery and missiles
Spying on the enemy with binoculars, radar and remote cameras
Sabotaging enemy equipment (disguise optional)
Silent sneaky stealth attacks (disguise and back-stab optional)
Planting proxy mines, laser-tripmines, timed explosives, and remote-trigger bombs
Placing various kinds of auto-turrets, energy shields, smokescreens, etc. to help your team
Healing wounded teammates and re-supplying ammo
Reviving fallen teammates
Capturing spawnpoints or creating new ones
Repairing vehicles and equipment
Driving land vehicles and boats
Flying aircraft
Building bridges, towers and other objectives
Piloting remote flyer drones
Parachuting out of transport aircraft
Hacking enemy computers to open doors or disable equipment
Defusing enemy bombs and mines
Delivering items from one place to another
Shooting the tires off of enemy vehicles so they don't roll straight
And you have a lot of room for creativity in all of the above. Maybe the mission is to plant explosives, but you can find new ways to approach that, etc.
Now, you ARE on the clock--hurrying is important. But between spawn waves you have time to think of your next tactic or attack.
