That list is rather extensive. I thought the preferred rippers were actually free, such as MTR. I guess if the companies promise something more enhanced I could see paying.

Thanks for the list; this should be made a sticky if you ask me.

Common sense! Actually go to some of these websites - it is fairly obvious they aren't legit.

The four top rippers/converters are:

- HandBrake
- MacTheRipper
- VisualHub
- MPEG Streamclip

I'd avoid any others.

Amen. The rest are a joke and/or a scam.

Why is CUCUSOFT on the list? I've used them to convert DVD's to my Iphone for well over a year now and never had any issue, (quality is just as any of the top four) and files also play on atv without an issue, except for the subpar quality that all these programs provide anyway.

When I had my windows machine I used Nero. Although not really user friendly, it works pretty good. Couple it with AnyDVD and your set.

I now use Handbrake exclusively.

I use Elgato's Turbo.264 and its software to convert DVD images for AppleTV or the iPod. Obviously you need the hardware for the software to work, but it is decent as well.

now, what really does the turbo.264 really do, even the apple store employee couldn't really explain. does it really speed up the encode time?

It converts the video freeing up your CPU.

It isn't any quicker than the average performance of using an iMac, MacBook or MacBook Pro. Some people have said it can take a little bit longer.

But it isn't how quick it does it, it is the fact it frees up your CPU so you can do other stuff.
