Beefiest Mac Pro 5,1 Processor

Hi guys.

Since I soon can't wait for Apple to release a nnMP any longer, I am looking for alternatives. So here's some questions since the search engine on my favourite "buy-used" site isn't properly functional.

· What is the most powerful processor for the 5,1? And 4,1?
· What is the difference between the 4,1 and 5,1?
· Does the 4,1 and 5,1 have the same number of PCIe lanes?
· Can I add thunderbolt with an expansion card?
· What's the fuss about being able to upgrade the 4,1 firmware to 5,1?

· What is the difference between the 4,1 and 5,1? Delidded CPU and faster RAM on 5,1.
· Does the 4,1 and 5,1 have the same number of PCIe lanes? Yes
· Can I add thunderbolt with an expansion card? No
· What's the fuss about being able to upgrade the 4,1 firmware to 5,1? Since 4,1 and 5,1 are almost the same, you can use the most powerful CPU from the 5,1 on the 4,1 as well as faster RAM. But you need to update the firmware to a 5,1 first.

Hi,

The top speed CPU on the 12 and 6 core CPU is 3.46GHz. These CPU's can be added to a 4.1 or 5.1 (Firmware upgrade required on 4.1). Other than that Parigot answered your other questions. If you wanted to keep the TDP of the CPU's under Apples recommendations the best CPU to go for would be the 3.06GHz in 12 Core. But if you don't have a power hungry GPU you will be fine with the 3.46GHz 12 Core CPU's.

De-liided CPU is used only on Dual CPU 4,1. Single CPU 4,1 and all 5,1's use regular lidded CPU.

How many watts is the power supply in the 5,1? (And 4,1?)
How many watts do I have to spare for the graphicscard when the 3,33GHz 6 core is used for example? Would a 980ti fit without any external power supply?

Good point Lou. I would note, doing that search would also reveal how much some folks here like to post (talk) so posting Qs on something already covered does give them a chance to chat it up, especially if you put cMP vs nMP in the title.
