Is anyone else somehow massively confused by what's going on when logged into a desktop (Adium) AIM account while having BeeJive Push AIM IMs?

Can someone explain how the system decides which IMs to push and which ones go to which client? It seems like I'm randomly not getting IMs pushed or randomly not receiving IMs on one client. Or that I'm getting "double IMs." Sorry to sound so vague, but I feel like there are a lot of variables and then some random bugginess going into this situation.

Something to do with which one has an away message up... Either way, why are you logged in the same account twice? Kinda redundant isnt it?

I do wish this was handled more elegently somehow.

It is not redundant. I use my computer throughout the day and my phone. Ideally I would like all messages to go to both places ot be honest.. but I don't see that happening.

I am not going to manually log off every time I step away from my computer for 2 minutes or stop using my phone.

Ultimately there will need to be a more elegant solution to this. To be honest, I would not mind using a beejive web page to do my computer IM'ing if it meant I was synched up.

Make it so AIM will only allow one log in at a time. So when the 2nd one signs on, it signs the first one off. That will make it so your messages always goes to the device you are currently using.

Hmm... Cant you just log in and have them both set to available? Would it send to both of them then? I never tried it, but thats how it always worked on AIM.

I am honestly bewildered by the system, and I think it's partially AOL's implementation that makes it confusing. Adding in BeeJive's preferences, Adium's preferences, etc. etc. makes this very complicated for some reason.

From what I can tell, if I set Adium to "Available," BeeJive will NOT get IMs pushed if it is set to "Auto Away." And if both are "Away," both clients will get the IM (including the push notification to the iPhone). So....

1) Adium Away, BeeJive Away - Adium gets IM, iPhone gets push
2) Adium Available, Beejive Away - Only Adium gets IM
3) Adium Away, Beejive Available - Only Beejive gets IM / push
4) Adium Available, Beejive Available - Unreliable, seems sporadic to me
5) Anything Invisible - Unreliable (???)

I'm not sure this is correct, but can anyone verify this or at least part of it? Keep in mind that with the AIM app, this isn't the same (wtf??? seriously...) and with other protocols (Google Talk, etc.) it is completely unrelated to this.

I too am very confused about this. It is even more confusing with gchat and fb chat too. I think I'm going to do some experimenting later to try to figure this out.

Well, I was doing some tests and found just about all of those to be true. Number 4 struck me as kind of odd...What I noticed is this:
If I connect to Beejive with Adium AWAY, IM's get pushed ONLY to Beejive, not Adium. Now, switch from away to Available on Adium and IM's get pushed to both devices.

Why not make separate screen names for each one? If you're away on Adium, post your iPhone screen name in that away message. That's what i do.

Sorry but that's counter intuitive.

It keeps you from having to ask questions like the thread starter is doing. Keeps you from getting IM's where you don't want them. Makes you not miss IM's where you do want them. Sounds perfect to me.
