I checked the app store for updates a little while ago and Beejive 4.0 has been released! According to the changelog, it now includes background support for iOS 4.0. I tried checking their website to see what that really meant and came up empty handed. Does anyone know if it's just using the save state/fast app switching or is it staying connected for a certain period of time in the background?

I know there is an IIRC app that has a 10 minute timeout where it stays connected while chatting. I'm really hoping something similar is going on here, I hate that beejive has to reconnect every time I open it back up to send a message.

I'm in class at the moment, so I can't whip out my phone and check. I was looking through the settings earlier after updating though, and I recall seeing a setting for how long it stays connected (1 hour by default I think). I certainly didn't notice any time spent reconnecting when I was switching in and out of it to different apps though.

Hopefully it supports Task Completion, the 10 minute window someone has mentioned already. I never thought about Task Completion being used this way until Colloquy did it, I think it is pretty ingenious! Hopefully Apple will ease up the API and allow IM clients to stay connected a little longer.

Though, 10 minutes is perfect for someone going into Beejive, sending or replying to a message, switching to another app, and then switching back within that 10 minutes. I wonder if that 10 minutes is reapplied every time you go in?

EDIT: Now I really want my iPhone 4. This app will be perfect with fast app switching and task completion

Obviously, it uses fast app switching. I think it also uses the 10 minute task completion API, since I don't get the reconnecting image when I switch right back to it. If I leave for a bit though and come back, it says reconnecting. I haven't tested to see if it was 10 minutes or not though. Also, it has updated graphics for the retina display.

I just left it alone for 15 minutes it loaded and I seen connecting for less than a second and it went right back into my convo. I must say it's very clean.

I just did some testing. It apparently stays running and connected with the task completion API for exactly one minute. If I switch back anytime after 1 min, it still does the fast app switching but pauses for a moment to reconnect. Even a minute is really nice, I can quickly switch from my convo to something else and back without a reconnect pause, which is really nice!

Good job beejive crew!

one of my most anticipated app updates, except for whatsapp which i am fairly disappointed in that they havent fixed it. anyways, beejive does utilize the task completion as well as the fast app swtiching, and reconnecting is faster than ever. really, i use to hate beejive. now, its one of my fav apps on the iphone. especially loving the retina display graphics.

I'll be able to comment on the improved graphics tomorrow after a early trip to the AT&T store :D

I hope that updated the icon. Apple shouldn't allow ANY updates in without the developer taking one minute to update their icon to high-res.

Just a warning for iPad owners. The latest Beejive does not work on the iPad! Perhaps this was on purpose to make you buy the iPad-specific version. If so, they definitely won't be fixing this in future updates. I'm probably going to go back to using AOL AIM app to use on the iPad, since I don't want to pay $10 again, especially since it was working fine before.

You guys are confusing what task completion is. Task completion means if you're sending a a pic to someone or uploading something to flickr it will continue to do so when you leave the app. It has nothing to do with how long it takes to reconnect when you switch back to the app.

If someone sends me a message on GChat while I'm underground in the subway (without phone reception), will it come through on BeeJive when I finally do get reception?

Not using GChat but I'm using Yahoo! IM and the answer is yes.

beejive is great. I bought IM+ first, but its terrible. It had so many bugs, so I had to delete it. Beejive has way better updates. It took 2 months on IM+ by fixing it.

Quick question.

I'm using Meebo and like it a lot. I tried eBuddy (free) and didn't like the sound notification.... just not loud enough and I really like the Meebo notification (I think it's the standard system one).

So before I purchase Beejive, can someone tell me if it uses its own sound for notification or the standard one?

You can choose between Default, AIM, MSN or Yahoo sounds.
