new things in ios 17 and 18 make me worry about privacy, whether its ios scanning my photos for nudity, or adding pet face auto tagging ( i already didnt like the face tagging in the past for humans, just seems like another reason to scan through all your photos and documents). and other things. but people say at the same time new updates add more security. but i have still yet to read one single story about widespread hacking on iphone no matter how old it is

All of the scanning happens on-device. I'm a privacy nut but this doesn't worry me. Apple takes privacy very seriously. They even stopped their plan to scan for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) over privacy concerns (and that's as good of reason for giving up a little privacy as there is). I would not worry about things like pet scanning.

I’d be more worried about missing all the security fixes in iOS 18.

Your phone is probably already scanning for nudity whether we know it or not. This was part of Communication Safety that came in iOS 15.2. (Just to be clear, I'm not referring to CSAM here.)

I'm curious what happens when your phone quits working and you need a new one. Are you going to reluctantly start using the latest iOS version again, or quit using smartphones altogether?
