It is not loud, so I have to put my ear up to SD to hear it. Two short beeps. Beep beep. Is it normal? It happens just before spinning up and once after spinning up.

I don't think it should.

You have had so many problems with your imac, GO TO AN APPLE STORE. The shutting down, and now this, and probably countless others that I have to search through your profile for. Your computer is broken. (sorry if you are taking this in a bad way, just some advice:eek: )

Also at low speeds it whines. In my next pst i will record and post it's noise. Also, the beep is very small you won't hear it.

My MacBooks superdrive whines a bit when a disk is going at low speeds as well. I just don't think it should beep.

Also, sorry for the post above, I was made at other things at the time, read your thread about your iMac not shutting down, and then read this one. If you have brought your mac to the apple store and they don't say anythings wrong, then you are in a worse situation. But from what I have heard, it sounds like you have a lemon. Also, I realize that you may not have an Apple Store near you. If that is true, you should call Apple Support.

I have the same beeps

I have the same beeps every time I put a CD into my SuperDrive. Nothing's wrong with it, though.

If the sound is what I'm imagining, it's not beeping--that's one of the internal motors moving around (either the optical head positioning itself, or the disc motor spinning up. It just sounds a little like a beep. Perfectly normal.

Basically, if your optical drive isn't making a horrible grinding sound, it's probably fine--modern ones make all manner of interesting noises, almost all of which are normal. Reminds me of those old CD drves that used caddies--boy, those made some oddball noises from time to time.

it could just be the high pitch whine of the laser focusing to the focal-length of the cd/dvd you just inserted... nothing is wrong. my powerbook 12" does the same thing, along with my dad's pioneer dvd burner in his pc. 2 or 3 "beeps"

Stop LOOKING for problems with your computer! Mine beeps too, its normal.

You are like...If I turn everything off in the room, put my ear on the back of my iMac while standing on my head and drinking Tequila, I can almost hear clicking when I open a Word file that has a number in the file name.

Not trying to be mean, but come on.

I don't heat any beeping in that...sounds like a normal slot-loading optical drive to me...
