So for reasons I don't want to get in to, AT&T had me swap my SIM with my Wife's SIM (from her Sony Ericsson). Everything on the phone works fine, visual voice mail, 3G etc. However when the iPhone was activated it was activated with the SIM now in my Wife's phone.

So before I attempt to upgrade to 3.0.1. Is there anything magical about the original iPhone SIM that means its still some how tied to my iPhone. Is it possible that when I upgrade because the ATT SIM in my iPhone isn't the one I activated it with that the phone would go in to locked (Emergency) mode only ?

Help.!

So I went ahead anyway, after getting no replies and I successfully updated to 3.0.1. I assume that means that any records Apple has now have the correct SIM information for activation.

I want to update to 3.1. Can I assume that if my 3.0.1 upgrade was successful that my 3.1 upgrade and activation should be good???

Go nuts dude! You're all good. Just make sure on your account end that you have the proper features so you don't get over charged.
