I have a first gen iphone and had updated it to 2.0. It got wet and would not restart so phone help had me hold down the two buttons and that worked but did not seem to be charging. Went to itunes and restored it but when I went to the next step I got a 1604 error. Took it into apple store but unable to help since it got wet. He did tell me the battery was taking a charge. Proceeded to try to uninstall itunes, restart computer, check usb ports, tried different computer (I am running windows xp). All I get is the apple screen or the itunes symbol with the cord.
Now when I plug it into the computer nothing happens, screen remains black and won't turn on. It will work when I am plugged into the wall(get apple or itunes screen).
Any ideas?

RESTORE IPHONE:
Step-by-Step

1) Close all programs and restart computer.
2) Open iTunes and plug in powered off iPhone with direct USB connection.
3) If iTunes fails to connect to iPhone...continue to #4, if it does...restore.
4) Shut DOWN iTunes again.
5) Power OFF the iPhone & Disconnect from computer. (Power off two ways-one will work, hold home and sleep button until off or just hold sleep button until off)
6) Hold down Home button & connect to computer using direct connected USB cable (keep holding down the home button until iTunes sees it).
7) It should go into recovery mode and iTunes should recognise it.
8) If you want to recover to previous software version, Hold Alt/Shift and click restore in iTunes. Then select the old update version.

DFU MODE:
Step-by-Step

1. Turn the iPhone ON
2. CONNECT it to the computer with a DIRECT USB connection.
3. Make sure iTunes is open so you'll know when it enters DFU mode.
4. HOLD the Power/Sleep-Wake button AND the Home button for 10 seconds.
5. RELEASE only the Power/Sleep-Wake button and continue to hold the Home button.
6. WAIT until iTunes recognizes the phone in DFU Restore mode (in Windows a bubble pops up saying it recognized new hardware "DFU Mode" or something to that effect)
The last step may take SOME TIME, like, say, even 60 seconds or so.
The screen should be OFF (black), if you see the "Connect to iTunes" logo, START OVER.
It may take a few tries to do the steps just right, just reboot
(hold both Power/Sleep-Wake AND Home until the Apple logo appears and the phone turns back on) then try again.
7. Then restore the iphone

You may have permanent water damage but Good Luck anyway

Thanks for the reply. It was working after water damage before I tried to restore it. My first problem now is that when I am connected to the computer the iphone has absolutely no power or seemingly so.

When I connect to the wall I can power off and on. When it is on I get the screen that has the itunes symbol and the cord.

This is a recent problem as last week it was working with the computer as well. Is there anything I can do from the wall to put it into DFU mode or in general why isn't the computer able to power it now but the wall will?

Not that I am aware of. Sounds like you may have a bad USB port or cable. Do NOT use a hub...you must plug directly into a USB port and try different ports.

Good Luck

I know the ports and cables are fine because my new 3g works fine on them. Ive tried several ports directly and on another computer. For some reason it just wont work with the computer.
Why would it work plugged into the wall but not computer. Could it be getting more power with the wall connection? Is there a way to get more power to it on my computer?

Thanks so much for your help!

Got me now, I have no more ideas for you. Try the Apple forums, you have a legit question. Leave the "Got wet" parts out of your post otherwise you will get a bunch of stupid replies.

Good Luck
