Land of the Free-Waiting for Term Limits
iMessages are still out of order, today I had to look up about 18 lines when my son sent a message. In between 4/3 and 4/6, but set today at noon. This happens all the time with message on OSX.

My shared folders are still disconnecting from my OSX server- and the shortcuts I create in finder work about 85% of the time, but not all as I expect.

OSX mail while sending seems to continue to be slow w/exchange server.

Shutdown time is a joke.

HDMI to TB port on external monitor still does not work correctly (or should I say, sometimes it works; but mostly it requires a restart of the system).

Battery life (while sleeping) is about 10% overnight. Lasts about 5 days (vs the 30 day advertised)

I have about 1.10GB in page outs after a days work running VMware, Mail, Safari, iCal.

I am growing tired of OSX not working as advertised- I expect it to work rather flawlessly, yet it seems I am finding fixes often that are reminiscent of why I changed from a Windows environment years ago.

Anyone have any confidence that the next update or software iteration will actually have a solid working foundation as 10.6.8 did (as an example).

Seriously considering going back to a Lenovo with Window's.

Machine : MBA- 2012- 512SSD i7 8GB
OSX 10.8.3

ny somewhere
you might consider investigating the issues themselves, seems very not-typical. a genius bar visit? a call to apple? or? something along those lines..

or, backup and reinstall clean.

just some thoughts...

Or let go of that MBA and get an earlier iteration of MBA that supports Snow Leopard...

Seriously, Mac OS X has never been this a bummer over a small but annoying bug that warrants someone else here to suggest BACKING UP AND CLEAN INSTALL a new copy... I hate it when OS X coming into Windows-esque mentality that it requires you to reformat every 3 to 6 months...

There is nothing in OS X that requires periodic reinstallations. You should very rarely have to reinstall. It is the last resort for most problems. ML is no different in that respect. There have been plenty of small and annoying bugs in OS X's history. Even (gasp!) is Snow Leopard.

Any computer can "go wrong", but that doesn't mean there is necessarily a major fault in the OS for allowing this state of affairs.

However, many of the OP's problems are not indicative of ML in general, so something is wrong somewhere.
Each one of these problems needs much more specific and detailed information before any serious help can be given.

e.g. Aliases: Are these aliases to network drives, or files and folders on the same volume? Do 85% of the aliases work, or do they work 85% of the time?
Do you mean you have a Thunderbolt to HDMI connector? How does this not work, exactly?

For the slow startup times, see this hint on Macoshints:

For the message timings, I would check your system clock. If that is not in sync with the server clock, then you may get some shifts.

I have no significant issues with ML 10.8.2. Startup in 7s and shutdown in 2-10s (use the workaround in this forum). Also, page out after VMware is really depend on how much ram used by VMware - not ML issues. I haven't really tested the battery during sleep, but pretty sure not 10% decrease during night.
Much faster and simple compared to windows notebook. I use MBA 2012 / 8gb / i5.
