Hi All,

This is an annoying one. I am currently using my Mac with a Belkin wireless router (legacy from my windows time, will be changing later on). And if I stop using the web for a bit of time, I seem to drop off the router. The wireless signal indicator on the Mac, still shows that it has full connection but I don't, I cannot connect to anything.

I have disabled and renabled the wireless connection in the Mac and it once again shows a full connection but there is none. Instead I have to turn off the Belkin, disconnect the Mac from wireless, then turn the Belkin on, then turn the Mac wireless on and all is well.

I wondered if, like windows there is a repair connection ability, that can disable then enable and perhaps re assign an IP address to the Mac, so I dont need to turn off the Belkin. The annoying thing is that my girlfriends IBM has no problem with the router.

Thank you,

Nicholas

Maybe the router is killing the DHCP address or reseting it every so often? See how long you have the DHCP addresses last for in the router settings.

When it drops off, can you enter the IP address of the router into safari, and re-connect it from there?

I would guess he should be able to. Unless when his Mac is seeing the wireless signals maybe it's just seeing the signal but, it can't get an IP address from the router. Maybe try running Network Diagnostics and see what that has to say, I find that tool very useful. The easiest way to access it is to go to Safari, and when it says your not connected to the internet you just click on the page and the Network Diagnostics window will pop up. Tell us if that helps :)

Hello,

Many thanks for the help so far. I have checked my DCHP settings and it is set to 'forever', I assume thats the most efficient?

Of course at the mometn I have a connection. I will check out your suggestions the next time it all drops off.

Thanks,

Nicholas

I tried to contact the router using the IP address and got straight on, reset it and bang we are back in business. Not too sure why it disconnects itself from the web but very glad to see its not my Mac.

So thank you for your advice, it worked!

That's what it says in their adverts anyway. This is much more likely to be an isp issue or firmware setup incorrectly than a hardware incompatibility problem.

In this instance, it's nothing to do with the ISP, I have checked that.

With regard to the setup, this is the 2nd Belkin I have had, the first one decided after 3 months to stop working altogether (fairplay to Belkin, they got me a new one out within 10 days, so not bad.)

It does the same thing to the IBM now as the Mac, I need to go in and reset it via either laptop when it just drops the connection. An annoyance now but I won't ever get a Belkin networking product. THeir mice and stuff I like but this no.
So I dont think its the setup.
