Bell = Huge deal for Canada

Today I went and spoke to a Bell rep, they told me that I can switch to them in November, itll cost me 50 bucks on a student plan for unlimited data, my fab 10 anywhere in Canada.
Unlimited text, visual voicemail, and so on.. itll be about 60 dollars, currently I am paying 120+ a month with rogers.
On top of that, they screwed up my replacement shippment so now I have a 1000 dollar phone bill that has turned off my service till they fix it.

Down with rogers, switch to bell, unlimited data and much better deals.
Who is switching?
 
um doesn't bell have a soft cap like every other carrier? 'unlimited' data usually means 5 gigs. with rogers i'm getting 6 gigs.

either way, believe me, being on rogers is not better.
 
I'd consider it but I'm stuck in Saskatchewan which only has SaskTel or Rogers. SaskTel's network is archaic, and even if they were to upgrade it I doubt they would ever get the iPhone. Besides, I certainly plan to live somewhere else within the next 3 years, so it makes sense for me to stay on a national network anyway.

By the way, what plan are you on that costs you $120 a month? I pay $87 a month MAX (except when Rogers erroneously charges me for MMS messages, which has happened 3 times in a row - although they fix it when I call them about it).
 
I will be in Ottawa for 2-3 months starting November. I have a UK O2 locked phone so I guess I can't take advantage of this, or can I ?
 
You can just unlock your phone and pickup a prepaid rogers card, girlfriend is currently doing that with my old one.

And it costs me 120 a month, because I have alot

75 voiceplan gets me
400 weekday minutes
my 5 canada wide
visual voicemail
call waiting
confrence calling
unlimited nights and weekends to anybody
unlimited text
and a few other things

iPhone 20 dollar value pack gets me
2 gigs of data
ring trax
unlimited text messaging
and a few others I cant remember

add that with the 911, tax and 6.75, yeah it gets pricy.

That's why im looking forward to the bell 50 dollar student, my fave 10, unlimited data and lots of other junk.
There new HSPA network supports up to 21 mbps, so they wont be lacking behind rogers at all, after all bell and telus spent 1 billion to put it accross Canada, it apparently is going to reach 93% of canadians.

you have to PAY for 911?! That should be illegal. Thank God we have the FCC in the US i guess that's one important great thing here....

same, my phone bill is around 110 a month,
I pay 30 bucks for unlimited Data
I pay around 60 bucks for: free after 5pm, free weekends, all calls to rogers and fido free, and 750 daytime minutes.
I pay 5 bucks for caller ID and visual voicemail (i think)
plus 6 bucks for system access fee
and taxes..

I might swtich..

My AT&T bill includes a $0.50 per month charge for "Enhanced Wireless 911 Surcharge." I think I'm being taxed for 911, so I pay, even if not by the call.

what about daytime minutes and what time is your free evenings start?
that could be deal breaker for me..

That might be a older plan your on right now but would this suit your needs. Maybe you can save some money still with rogers in the mean time:

Student smartphone combo $55

200 anytime
MY10 nationwide
unlimited evenings at 6
500mb of data or at $5 for 1 gb
whocalled, call forwarding

Then stick the $20 visual voicemail package on it:

unlimited text, call display with name display, and visual voicemail

So that comes out to 55+20+~$3(government reg fee) So $78 plus GST.

Now that gives you lots of room to upgrade to 1 gb of data if you need it. Also you can throw on first 400 incoming for $8. It would still be cheaper then what you pay right now. With the my 10 nationwide I don't think you will need the extra minutes though.

Also if you do switch to it. FIGHT THEM. if they try to make you extend another 3 years. You shouldn't have to your hardware is already getting payed for. They will probably try to get you to extend it. If they do ask for a manager. If the manager can't help you ask for retentions, they will give you a better plan then what I just mentioned without extending the contract.

EDIT:
another thing the bell rep didn't tell you the details on that. They tried that on me too. Its actually $50 for 200 local, fab 10 nationwide evenings at 6, unlimited data and thats it. So now you need text caller id, texting and voicemail so add $20 to that. PLUS the system access fee. So

50+20+6.95+.75=$78 plus tax.

Isn't that funny bell and rogers plans price up exactly.....and they say they compete.

Yeah I can understand a tax or mandatory set up but the way he said it made it seam as if he by choice selected it or something.....

From what I understand it's a law in Canada - which, by the way, is why Skype for iPhone isn't available in Canada - doesn't meet the 911 requirements (i.e. fees, I assume).

Umm...Skype has been available here in Canada for about 2-3 months now...

Anyway, on topic. That Bell student plan sounds pretty good, although I work for Rogers so I get a crazy discount on my plans. I pay about 25 dollars a month for my iPhone (250 min, 6GB data, unlimited SMS and MMS, tethering, call display, call waiting...all that stuff) :D
 
Bells customer service lags way behind Rogers. All of their customer service call centers are in India. I'd rather support a Canadian company that keeps Canadians working...just a thought.

You really think yours is free? The difference is the CRTC (like the FCC) makes them break it out in the bill. Yours is just included in the cost.

Then I guess Skype addressed Canadian 911 compliance, because that was the reason.

I wouldn't know whether or not they did, though; I downloaded it from the US store the day it launched and have been enjoying it ever since.

If you call in the day I believe you will get people from India; however, most of the time I have dealt with extremely friendly, professional, and helpful Canadians, probably from the GTA.
 
I'll admit I LOVE rogers customer service, open 24 hours a day, like no wait times, and the iPhone even has its own department for questions and service so you get connected instantly.

However, the whole deal " keep canadians working "
My 1 contract wont do **** all, bell is a canadian company, regardless that is also giving canadians a job, im switching to a more affordable job so my entire pay check isn't flushed down the drain to a company that is way over priced.
 
I only hope Bell and Telus' entry into the iPhone market brings some of the Rogers/Fido plans to heel at last particularly the data plan which should be unlimited.

One thing I will say about Rogers/Fido is that their reception is much better than Bells and so is their customer service. I don't know how HSPA will change things on the reception front. As for customer service I have often rung Bell (for my landline adn BB) and had to call at least 3 or 4 times before things were done. Sometimes they weren't.

Well first off skype does not have 911 access its not a government reason for it not being released. Also shaw home phone at first did not have complete 911 details handed to the operator and they were still aloud to operate. Thats skype thing was not related to 911 at all.

As for the government making you break down the 911 fee thats not true either. Go look at at koodo, fido etc. No 911 fee. Its just some carriers try to make an excuse to charge you more.
