I'm preparing a full article with benchmarks comparing the new iMac running the Radeon HD 2600 Pro versus the GeForce 8800 GS. But here's a teaser:

ETQW at 1920x1200 High
2600 Pro = 28 fps
8800 GS = 60 fps

Prey at 1920x1200 High
2600 Pro = 33 fps
8800 GS = 78 fps

iMaginator 4 (Core Image test)
2600 Pro = 27 sec
8800 GS = 39 sec

Based on these and other tests I've run, the nVidia GeForce continues to excel in 3D (Games, etc.) while even "weaker" versions of ATI Radeons beat it running Core Image apps (Motion, Aperture, Color, etc.).

thanks, awaiting your article.
but i'm startled about the significant performance tradeoff!
is this driver related? how come the geforce sucks at
core image apps? is this coreimage specific or os/system-wide?
does this mean that even e.g. the scrolling within safari will be
unsmooth? expecting my 8800-equipped imac next week ...

edit: since you know best: would i notice any difference
between my imac 2600 and the gs800 one without
doing aperture etc.?

considering other benchmarks off barefeats,
the 8800 is up to 4 times faster in opengl apps
but the ati wins all core tests. weird.
