I have been waiting for the Merom chip to arrrive before buying a new MBP. Now I'm having second thoughts though and want to check what benefits the new chip will bring other than increased speed and battery life. Will there also be lower operating temperatures? Any other reason to wait?

Face it, the Merom chip-powered Mac is a legend. A myth. It doesn't yet exist. If and when it happens, we will then know how powerful/hot/battery conserving/expensive/able to leap tall buildings it is. Not before.
If you want uninformed speculation, Search the forums for Merom, you'll find plenty.
Givens:
1) Apple will continue to release new machines based on the latest available technologies - and they will continue to not preannounce products before the launch dates
2) Apple will make product specification decisions that many people with disagree, argue about and second guess, ad nauseum. "They should have included (xx) in the machine, but kept it at the same price."
3) People who bought a machine within (1 - 2 - 4 - 8 - 16) weeks of the announcement will whinge and complain that it isn't fair that THEY bought a machine that is now obsolete.

Otherwise, everyone seems to WANT the 64-bit "power" of Merom. I just like the identical thermal characteristics to Yonah and improved performance at the same clock speed. At least that's what Intel says.

- 64 bit (yes I think next few year 64bit will be much bigger with 64 bit Intels coming out in mass and Vista etc)
- New architecture - suppose to be 20% better than current dual core
- Hopefully will run cooler and if not Apple will hopefully have worked out solutions to the hot Macbook Pros/ Macbooks
- And well, if you are waiting for Macbook, then it might have the next integrated graphics chip (but thats not on point for this thread)
So basically its waiting for new architecture that is 64bit dual core which might run cooler.. and have ironed out problems of current batch
Plus throwing in a new CPU/Mb isn't like bringing out an entirely new model, so its more of a revision. And Rev B does kick Rev A...
Saw a blackbook today for first time in person. Sooo sexy

Merom is pin compatible with Yonah sockets. So with that being said, Merom chips are more or less designed to fit where Yonah currently does now.fewture said:
