Benifits of new imac

i going to get a mac for christmas but i still havent decided which one

I was going to get the 2.0 ghz 20 inchimac but alot of people have said the screen is.... well rubbish.

I was just wondering what other things the new imac has but the old one hasnt

I can get an old 2.16 for the same price

After looking at both, I went with a refurbished 2.16 white iMac. I prefer the looks, it's ever so slightly faster (which will frankly make no discernable difference whatsoever with what I do), and I was seriously put off by the glossy screen of the new iMac.

The new iMac uses the Santa Rosa chipset and a newer video card. Performance-wise, the numbers I've seen suggest the two machines are pretty even overall, so I think it boils down to preference as to appearance.

I don't mean to discount the importance of the screen difference, but I'd bet Apple will sort the screen issue out.

I got the 24 inch white 2.16 imac as a demo unit and I LOVE IT!

The screen is just sweet!

I think the new imacs are nice but i keep hearing about little defects with the new imacs so i'd just get the white one!

The new 2ghz iMac is faster than the old 2.16ghz model, by a bit. THe faster FSB trumps the faster clock speed for most day to day things. I suppose that there might be a couple instances where the faster CPU gives the older iMac an edge, but I'm not sure what.

The only other real differences, besides the screen of course, is the GPU and the max RAM. The new iMac will handle 4gb, the old only 3gb, and only 2gb if you want matched DIMMs for maximum speed (there's a _small_ performance penalty if you don't use matched DIMMs). The x1600 is probably better than the 2400PRO, although once the drivers for the 2400PRO mature it might even out or even pull ahead a tiny bit... that's a big maybe, though, as we just don't know when they will improve the drivers and how much difference it will make.

Finally, the screen. The old iMac has a technically superior screen, but the only thing that I can say is GO LOOK AT THEM, side by side if possible. My local CompUSA has old stock iMacs and new ones, so I was able to a side by side comparison. I liked the new display just fine, even better than the old one it was sitting next to, but that's just me. It's a very subjective judgment and I don't think anyone should listen to people on the internet's opinion, other than go check for themselves.

There's not much to choose over the old white iMac and the low end aluminium, although the resale value of the latter will be higher.

The 2.4Ghz Radeon 2600 aluminium would be the best best by far however.

I am having the same problem, except I love the new screens. If you go see them in person they are not that bad. I decided just to dish out the extra money for the 2.4 ghz new model.

I'm in a similar situation.. I recently bought a 2.16 24" and just sold it (for what I paid) and upgraded to the 2.8ghz 24".. I was really hesitant about doing so because of the glossy screen (I do prefer the matte screens; I purposely ordered my MacBook Pro in the matte version vs. the glossy).. I have no complaints at all with my current 2.16 machine, but after reading the early performance reviews I decided to jump on the glossy bandwagon.. I hope I don't regret it.. If so, I will sell it and go back to a 2.33 and call it a day.. iMacs have such a good resale value that there's no reason to at least give it a try.. You can either return it or sell it privately if you decide it's not for you.. Well, that's my reasoning anyways..

Another thing to remember is that although a laptop with a glossy screen might pose a problem, a desktop should be different in that you have more control over the conditions in which it's used.. Just some more things to think about.. Either way, they are both great machines and the previous model iMacs are far from outdated..

I love my new 24" aluminum iMac too, particularly the new glossy screen. I upgraded from an early 2006 Core Duo iMac with a matte panel so I know what I am comparing it to.

My 20" aluminium iMac has a beautiful screen; best I've ever had on my desktop.

A visit to an Apple Store or a Best Buy would help ease your worries about the new iMac. The new iMac is practically silent, runs cool, and has a beautiful screen.

Lots of people on the internet love to stir up controversy. Listen to the nay-sayers at your own risk.

I am kind of weary of upgrading to the new iMac 24'' since there have been some mixed reviews. I am on the white iMac 24'' right now and would have strongly considered buying the new one had there been more positive reviews
Some people have also had issues using the new iMac with EA games. I would wait to see how nice leopard plays with the new iMac before making any decisions. Apple has to know something about Leopard and the new iMac before putting such specs into the current machine.

Interesting choice of words. Doesn't sound like a "problem" sounds more like only a decision.

I bought a 24" aluminum iMac despite being against the all-in-one computer approach for years (I upgraded from a G5 tower, so it was a big shift for me). I have to say, I'm quite happy with it, and I really love the glossy display. So count me as another positive vote for the new iMacs. You do definitely need to upgrade the RAM, but I managed to pick up a 2GB stick for $130 including shipping, and it took about 45 seconds to install.

It did take me a day or two to get used to mine. But now every morning when I get to work to my old keyboard I miss the slimline. Might have to pick one up for my office.

you just need to calibrate it when u take it out of the box...someone on here posted the calibrations earlier in a thread somewhere here and it works like a charm

I can't stress this enough: GO LOOK AT ONE IN PERSON and then decide. There's got to be someone selling Macs nearby you, and making a little trip to investigate something that you're going to spend $1000-2000+ on isn't a bad idea in general.

Personally, after looking at one, I was amazed by how many people were upset by it. I thought it looked great, glossy 6-bit panel and all. But, I'm probably a bad judge since I have a small color vision deficiency, so I can't see the "normal" full spectrum of colors, so it could have something to with it. On the other hand, something like 30% of all men have some level of color vision defect, so there's a good chance you do too!

The only problem with the 20" aluminum screen is the viewing angle. If you are always looking at your monitor pretty head on it looks great. If you want to walk around the room while you watch a movie, the colors will shift on you at severe angles. Technically, the low end 20" Alu is roughly equivalent to the the 20" White you are looking at with a few minor speed bumps, (FSB, RAM limit.) In PC tests the 2400XT and the x1600 are roughly equal but the 2400 is DX10 compatible and has hardware accelerators for the common video formats. My advice is look at both of them and get whichever you think looks better. You'll be happy either way.

Seems most of the dissatisfied users are those that upgraded from what many of us would consider new already. If you upgrade from a previous 24" model to a new 24" Al, you may be disappointed that it is not a world shaking improvement.
We upgraded from a G3 to a 20" 2.4Ghz and the difference is stunning. I find the 20" screen to be spectacular and the speed of the 2.4 with 2Gb of ram is amazing. Perhaps some of you are able to upgrade simply because something new is available. Those of us that upgrade at 3, 4 or even 5 year intervals are usually very happy with what we get.
Those of you considering an upgrade, look at the jump that YOU are making in hardware and OS. Not the baby steps that some others are fretting over.

I'm just sayin'.
