I'm looking for the closest resolution to the retina screen as I can find, while still being compatible with my older macbook pro (13" late 2013). I don't like blocky text and that's most important to me in terms of improvement. I have a 4k 27" msi monitor and the text is not great. It's scaled at 1080 "best for MSI", which looks better than 720p or 1600 x 900.

I'm thinking that the 27" 4k image you have now (looks like 1080p, which is 4k "scaled" in HiDPI mode) is probably as good as you can get...

... unless you go to a 5k display (scaled to "looks like 1440p"), of which there are few.
They're more expensive, as well.
