i am looking to buy a good 2TB External hard drive to store music and pictures ..

any suggestions ?

some thing which some one can suggest with experince ..

also can i use Firewire external hard rive with imac ?

are they better/faster then USB to the noticeable extend?

Always buy Western Digital HDs and Externals.

Although I suggest WD as well, there is no need to avoid other manufacturers. WD has no mid-level 2TB drive, only slow Green Caviar or fast but expensive, noisy and hot Black Caviar.

Try to find one with FW800 because it's faster than USB

I have two 1TB Western Digital My Studio HDDs with USB 2.0, FW800 and e-Sata ports.
At work I have 12 more of them.

They are reliable, withstand constant use for months/year and are quite fast.

FW800 offers 65MB/s, USB 2.0 maybe 35MB/s, on a lucky day though.

I have a buffalo external drive that supports FW800 and it works great. It's only a 1TB but I'm sure there are 2TB drives out there. Buffalo external drives are reliable and resonably priced.

Try this...I have the 1Tb version, works great...no issues for 4 months now since owning it with my 27 i5

thank you will look into it .... this has FW400 not FW800 correct?

For simple storage of music and pictures, USB2 is more than enough.

however, if you have an internal 2TB you should store all of your music and pictures internally and set up your new 2TB external as a BACKUP drive, not storage.

Again, USB 2 is more than sufficient for backup as well.

2TB USB 2 drives are over $100 cheaper than FW800.

Oh, and FW400 and FW800 are interchangable. If you get a drive with FW400, no big deal, it will convert to FW800 with an adapter.
