I'd like to be able to login to my youtube account, view my subs and view my watch later list. I'd like to be able to use the app in the background like the google play music app does.

Also if one works without the need for adverts that would be great, the official youtube app has too many and won't work in the background.

Does anybody know of a cheap or free app that can do all this?

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I was hoping for up to date info.

I personally use the Protube app. I find it offers better performance than the Youtube app (at the time I bought it, at least), supports features like split-screen, PIP, background audio and blocks ads (but that also means that certain content like VEVO music videos may not be playable).

Not sure what your definition of "cheap" is. It costs $3, and I find it's one of the best $3 I have spent on an app.

I'm also a big fan of ProTube and it's features (Slide Over/Split View, Picture in Picture, background audio, blocks ads) and that all for a few euro/dollars (one time only). Is it perfect? Nope but comes close.

I'm considering alternatives. The official app runs down my battery very quickly. You can feel the phone getting very hot.

So I found out I had a backup of the old youtube app. I've installed that and the phone no longer melts when running it. I don't know what they did with the new one, but it drains the battery at a ridiculous rate.

Well well:

So is this one ok?

Thanks.

The official app is awful. This Tubex would be perfect if worked in the background and showed comments.

And why none of them can display 2160p videos?

Personally I would like to see these features, plus the ability to download any YT video. Over time these apps are removed from the App Store, or lots of them have very annoying ads.

A great alternative which can play in the background (audio) and has Slide Over/Split View and Picture in Picture support is ProTube. I'm not sure if it support 2160p videos.

The ability to download YT videos is only officially supported in the official YT app if you take a monthly subscription. There are indeed sometimes unofficial apps in the App Store (most of them with annoying ads indeed) that can download but these are taken down after a short while when Google asked to remove these. I downloaded AudioTube at one point and removed the ads when I still could (in-app purchase) and still use it a lot. It's excellent for watching videos offline. It only lacks an audio only option to save space for music.
