Hello,

I am looking for a reliable and quick IOS app to browse files (mostly movies, photos and PDF) stored in a couple of Samba and FTP severs.

Can anyone please recommend the best app available, better if free?

I have not installed yet iOS 11 and I am wondering if the new File would allow to browse FTP and Samba servers.

Thanks,
Daniele

FileBrowser by Stratospherix is really good and is good all around although I'm not sure if it has things and opensubtitles.org and automatic metadata download for video as Infuse e.g. has.

If you need a video (only) and in the case of nPlayer also music aside of video app then I can also recommend:
Infuse Pro 5 (12.99 dollar)
nPlayer (4.99 dollar) / nPlayer Plus (9.99 dollar)

Is that possible? Please advise

Do you mean you can't see files belonging to other apps under iCloud using FileBrowser? e.g., you want to see files from the folder for the Pages app stored on iCloud? If so, you can't - just like on the iPad, files in app folders in iCloud are firewalled between apps. You can see them all with the new Files app in iOS 11 but third party apps cannot.

Actually I have used Documents by Readdle for a couple of years and I have always seen the files belonging to other apps.

I have another problem, I have created a directory into the FileBrowser folder on iCloud but I can't see it on the mac under OS X, what have I done wrong?

The way I get around this is in every app now Instead of save file, I always ‘share’ open in... File Browser and then save on iCloud Drive. Within FileBrowsers own folder on iCloud I made subfolders for everything. Like for documents, or music, or videos etc. It sounds more complicated than it is... I just moved everything inside File Browsers folder as if that was the root directory.

Ah, yes - good workaround.

With Documents, were you sharing the files? Using Documents, I can't see files from other apps without sharing.

Another vote for FileBrowser - the most useful app I have ever bought (upgraded to Business version). Customer care is also excellent.

Hi
In OSX Finder there should be a FileBrowser folder inside the iCloud Drive location where you will see the new folder. Sometimes it takes a while to appear though. As sparkd says, all apps are sandboxed to their own iCloud folder. But you can access files from other iCloud folders with FileBrowser by tapping + and then 'Import File'. This copies anything you select to the current FileBrowser folder. Other apps like Readdle Docs make it look like this iOS import screen is part of their app so that's why it seems they can access other folders!

The new Files app also allows copying of files from one app's iCloud storage to another's iCloud storage.

Also once you have all your files inside the File Browser folder on iCloud, as long as you keep using File Browser as your file management app, it’s seamless then. Just treat the File Browser folder as ‘root’ and ignore the app folders outside. I still have files inside them but treat them like my ‘work in progress’ files and save all my completed final files inside File Browser folder because that’s like my final finished product so to speak. And really in any app you can share-open in any other app that can read the same file type as well. So really there is no real restrictions on files and managing them. You are just viewing things in a different way than we are used to on a traditional computer and before clouds etc.

Yes, there are now many ways to crack the same nut! Incidentally there's a new FileBrowser update on the way with full Files integration and drag drop both within the app and into/out of the app.

Yes the FileBrowser for business version already has this integration. Great app!

Good to hear - an excellent app getting even better.

Thanks for your replies but I have not understood completely.

I have tried both FileExplorer Pro and FileBroweser and in neither cases I can not drag and drop photos from within the app to for instance Apple notes.

Am I missing something or do these app not support drag and drop? Is an update coming to support it?

Thanks for helping,
Daniele

Drag n drop is coming to File Browser. I think it already has been updated in File Browser for business. But is supposed to come to the regular FB as well.

Does File Browser support the Document Provider Extension, as in that other apps can access files (read and save) from shares directly through File Browser?
I know File Explorer Pro can do this, Transmit also.

Yep. You can share open in File Browser then save to any share in FB. Similarly, in FB from any share open in and select the appropriate app.

I am not sure I understood what you said. Is it possible for example to start Pages, open a file from Pages from a share in File Browser, edit it in Pages and than save it from Pages directly to the share?

Yes, when you open it from FileBrowser any changes are saved back to where ever the FileBrowser copy is located ( on device or NAS).
