Best Back to School iPhone Apps

coolbreeze - you're right. I rewound the video a few times myself thinking the same thing :)

I'm gearing my Back to School App search toward my oldest (rising 8th grader) as she's likely getting an iTouch in the coming months (waiting to see the new line I've read about).

Right now, I'm focusing on flashcard apps and I can't believe how many there are to choose from. It's almost overwhelming. Most of the apps I've found are specific to a certain subject (sign language, spanish, geometry, LSAT, etc) so I've whittled through those and come up with a list I'm still considering.

  • Flash-Me - $3.99
  • Touchcards - $1.99
  • iFlipr - $4.99
  • StudyCards - $9.99
  • Flashcardz - $.99
  • Study Aid - $1.99
  • Study & Me - $.99

  • Notecards - $1.99
  • Flashy - $.99
  • iCards - $.99
  • gFlash Pro - $4.99

The above list is in no specific order, just how they came up with a recent search.

I'm leaning toward Cram, but I was hoping to hear from any of you who might have experience using one or more of the above (or another app I may have omitted/missed).

Things that are important (or at least desirable) include:

  1. The ability to generate cards online, rather than just via the iPhone.
  2. If it requires a separate computer-based program, that program should be Windows as I don't have a Mac. I've seen a few that require Macs with no Windows options available.
  3. I don't care about the ability to add photos or sound (for now). I guess it's a nice feature, but it's not vital to my search.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. If you're a developer and don't have a Lite version (some/many of the above do), a promo code would guarantee a review from me (if positive) or an e-mail/PM with suggestions (if negative).
 
Great flashcard list. I"m hunting for one too.... i want iFlash (mac desktop), but i didn't buy it when i had the money.

I need to get back to this - i need something easy to create decks. There was one of them online that had a great feature with another website with a TON of premade ones.... but that required a purchase of get them.

So i think i'll take your list and make another pass thru them and decide.

Oh and I do need the ability to add pictures.
 
Also, I'm looking for a good graphing calculator app. I'll be honest in that I've never used a graphing calculator before, so I have ZERO idea as to what is vital and what is fluff on the graphing calculators I've seen in stores and the apps I've seen online. Free is great, of course, but I don't mind paying for a good app for her. Remember, this is for an 8th grader, not a college student (if that matters in terms of necessary functions). Her school sent out a supply list at the beginning of summer and suggested a TI-83. She currently has a TI-34II (from a supply list a couple of years ago). I believe the TI-83 would run me about $90 anyhow, so an app that does what it's capable of should still save me some money.

Lastly, I'm looking to get her a microphone to record her classes. IMHO, her study habits are abhorrent and I'd like to work with her on note-taking skills, among other things. I've seen two in particular that I'm interested in - the Mike and Brando Mini Capsule. Big difference in price between the two (although the Mike is about $20 less on Amazon than on their site), so money possibly saved on the calculator could go towards this.

and, yes, iStudiez Pro looks very nice.
 
[app]graphing calculator[/app] is as good as a TI-83 and much easier to use then a TI-83.

Here is my advice on the calculator.

Ask the school/teacher what will be allowed. The TI calcs are a test approved device - meaning they can be used in the SAT, ACT and probably the state testing you/she may have to do, i'm going to beyond say that the Touch is NOT such a device. There would be nothing worse than having to learn a new calculator right before a test. Not that it couldn't be done.... and the teacher might not even allow the Touch to be used during class (thinking games not calculating). Also, teachers don't LIKE to teach "different". They are going to have "THIS" model, and that will be all they will be responsible for teaching.

I'm watching for a sale on the TI's for my DD myself. I'm STILL kicking myself for not buying it last year for $45 at Staples. :banghead: But they DO go on sale for less than $90. Meanwhile, my DD will be using the GraphCalc posted until i find a decent priced TI-84 - but that is a perk of her schooling situation currently since i'm her Algebra teacher.

Also, you might want to check with the school as to how much they will be allowing her to USE the Touch. Some schools won't let it come out at all - i'd hate to see you spend all this money on Apps and build the whole study system and have it not be allowed to be used.

I'm not sure the battery life will survive recording classes and everything else - someone that has tried might have to speak up on that. But again, having it out and on the desk might not go over well in a Middle School.
