No, Crumpler isn't going to give you the MASSIVE backpack that you're asking for.
If you want large capacity (and I mean LARGE), get a "Caribee College 40 17" Extend" backpack. It's bigger than 40 litres. I know because I compared lots of big backpacks recently, and believe me.......volume and dimensions specs are pretty screwy when it comes to backpacks. Bags that claimed to be 32 litres were smaller than my old 26 L backpack, so it was useless to me. I settled on a Caribee Recon, which is the best backpack I have ever owned. It's probably around 35 L, and is quite big.
The College 17" Extend is MASSIVE. I'd consider travelling with it instead of my bigger 60 L hiking backpack from Mountain Equipment Co-op, or my 70 + 10 L travel backpack. When I'm wearing it, the backpack easily goes from my waist/butt up to the top of my neck (bottom of the backside of my head). It also extends far back, as any bag made for books should.
Yes, the laptop compartment will be too big for your MBA in terms of how deep the pocket goes, but that doesn't matter a lot. Buy a sleeve if you're concerned.
For some reason, the Caribee USA website doesn't have the backpack I'm talking about, but they do have it in Australia, and this particular store has them on sale.
You could get it shipped to the USA, I'm sure.

It looks like a pretty average sized laptop, but believe me....it is huge. That back is made for at least a 17" MBP, and trust me....there's still space left over at the top.
