best backup utility?

hey

i have a sr mbp and a wd passport. i would like to use my passport to do nightly or weekly updates. i have tried superduper, but it always has problems mounting the image on the disk once an image has already been created. is there a better option?

I've never used SuperDuper with disk images, but it works perfectly for me, I have my external partitioned into a clone of my hard drive and some extra space, and the clone is a bootable clone that updates every night with the changes made since the last update, and it works flawlessly. You might want to try that instead of disk images? The other program to try is Carbon Copy Cloner (I think that's what it's called??)

I use rsync and a script that checks my external devices for the disk 'BACKUP', whenever detected, it automatically rsyncs my user folder to the external backup disk.

SuperDuper is great. It just works!

I myself use Carbon Copy Cloner, it's worked great for all of the backups and disc images I've had to make.

I recommend it.

Yeah, I saw someone talking about doing that in another thread and it's just perfect, I made one partition the exact side of my hard drive and it's a bootable clone so it has everything I need on it to restore my MBP if the hard drive crashes and burns or something... I can also boot off of it for repair issues or again, if the hard drive dies, and use SuperDuper to restore to a reformatted or new hard drive if necessary. I set it to update every night in the middle of the night, the comp wakes, the backup starts, and then I have SuperDuper set to shut down the computer when it's done. Then I can use the extra storage for stuff I don't want around anymore in my folders and taking up space, but something that I might some day maybe want to use and regret deleting if I had gotten rid of it for good. That's definitely happened before with big movie files I wanted to get rid of to free up space.

I'm sure Carbon Copy Cloner has nearly the exact same features as SuperDuper of making a bootable clone, smart updating it so it saves time, and all that other jazz.

did you do anything special to make it bootable? i just did backup-all files from the dropdown and hit copy. does it really wake your compy when it backs up? i had no idea. will it do that if you close the lid overnight?
